It's interesting, though given where they've got to, I'm not sure how they are going to make it to 13 or 26 Eps. (usual for most anime series) without loosing the intensity.

Bah anime FTL i can stand the drawing style. And the storylines are always so pseudo it makes my brain hurt.
Style varies enormously.
As for storylines, yes a large number of them are shit, predictable, horribly bias (classic example being when a highly subjective question like 'is it right to kill someone?' is asked, and they have the balls/stupidity to answer it) or just plain pretentious (Evangelion as a prime example).
But it's like any TV/film, there are some gems out there.

CMaster

I'm no anime fan - in fact the frequent laziness in the animation really bugs me in a lot of it.
But there are some examples of japanese animation that are just plain good TV/good films. Same as with any art form - the best is good, and to disregaurd that because of prejudice against a particular form is silly.

Animation quality is a big thing for me too, fluidity and crispness is important, though with the current bar being ever raised, older (yet still good) series can look relatively dated.
I prefer an anime that's simple in style but of high quailty to a badly done, over detailed mess.

Animes of note:

Serial Experiments: Lain (headfuck/wierdness/ponderings-on-the-nature-of-the-human-mind-and-the-future-of-the-internet)
FLCL (bat shit crazy wierdness, was my first anime I saw (bar stuff like Akira), nearly sent me insane)
Last Exile (fantasy/sci-fi/drama, great animation quality)
Azumanga Daiou (disgustingly cutsey for the most part, but some of the funniest shit I've watched anywhere nestled within (taps joke is just insane))
Memories (three films exploring different themes)
Samurai Champloo ('historical' comedy/drama/thing)
Zettai Shonen (slow, probably quite boing, I love the animation/style though)
Akira (because it's Akira)
Elfen Lied (simply because the gore so wonderfully offsets the sections of warmness of it, the quadrapaledicisation scene is a good example)
Cowboy Bebop (cowboys in space, but good, very good)

Animes that people say are great but are a bunch of arse for falling into one or more pitfalls that they sometimes do:

Naruto (It's for kids, the animation quality is shite, the storyline is predictable and without real depth, the same old bollocks of 'you only get strong by protecting people important to you, not by fighting for yourself' is repeated over and over and over and over....)
Bleach (Not as bad as Naruto, it's a semi decent anime, but over hyped)
Speed Grapher (The writer clearly never recieved pocket money, or had it stolen by bullies; thus anyone who has money is evil, sexually degenerate, psycopathic, murderous and gets off (literally) on hurting people)
Evangelion (I could write books on how this is a pile of faecal matter)*
One Piece (see Naruto)

*And Asuka DOES get violently ripped apart! The end scene with the two of them was created after the series aired and the studio building was besieged by outraged fans.

BlackDove

I'll agree with all but Evangelion.

Evangelion is more or less the best anime ever made. The only people who don't like it, that I've seen so far, just simply weren't able to comprehend it, or appreciate it for what it was.

Second best anime "collection" of sorts in my book though is Ghost in the Shell, be it Stand Alone Complex related or otherwise.

I got Eva, I just couldn't stand the whole way it was told. I can imagine the writers sitting in their bean bags cracking one out over how chuffing clever they thought they were being.
Something like that anyway....

Actually the creator (Hideaki Anno) had a four year lasting case of depression and related psychological illnesses before and during the series creation. This, of course, influenced the series design and psychological aspect as it was in part reflective on human mental pathology.

I hated Eva. And don't you doubt that I understood it. I understood what was going on fine. But a cast full of unlikable characters, plus some not-actually that creep conspiracy stuff and some butt-ugly mecha does not enjoyment make for me. Oh, and the ending was retarded as hell too. 10 minutes before the end "Maybe life isn't so bad. I'll stop being so emo k lol" and everything is good?

The 1st anime I ever saw.....

POKEMON !

ok let's forget that one!

I then saw 6 years later, Furi Kuri "FLCL"
Was weird crap, but I still saw it.

I then Saw Naruto, Loved it up to the start of the 70 fillers... I've decided to forget that one now.

I then watched Yakitate... A bit over-obsessive about Bread... YES BREAD !
Azuma Kazuma's Quest to Create Japan's own Signature Bread !
(yup, we british, the french, Italians and Germans Beat Japan in creating it's own bread.)

I then saw Eureka Seven, Very Great Anime ! Recommend watching!

Then Watched Evangelion and the 2 Movies, Must say I loved the Movies !
And there's 4 more movies on the way ! :p

Then I think Dribble Joy started me on "Higurashi no naku koro ni" Weird anime but was quite good ! (Ooooo! lots of Murders and Jumpy bits sometimes!)

Then I saw Mushishi ! A very Peaceful Anime, set in the past ! Nice to sit down and watch :) A bit weird and wonderful !

And then Behold !!!

DEATH NOTE ! (or Desu-noto)

A Great Thilling Anime unlike I've ever been hooked to before !

As great as a movie !

WATCH IT ALL !!!

I dont have the money to throw away on a cartoon style i generally dont like. Finding good anime in the bunch is kinda like finding the silver bar among the stainless steel ones. They all look the same on the surface and you cant posibly tell witch one youll like without first throwing money at it and chances are youll regret you did with the amount of bad anime out there.

My point here being anywhere i can get it free :P

*Cough* you may find this program (http://www.utorrent.com) rather useful. Its good for US and UK TV as well, actually.
Cowboy Bebop is an awesome audio-visual thing. The story and characters are a bit cliched, but the way its blended into a music-based experience is something else.
I enjoyed Akira, although I can certainly see it not being to everybody's taste.
Erm, I actually quite liked Azumanga too, although I have no idea why.
Grave of the fireflies depressed me horribly. Oh god so miserable. The rest of the Ghibli stuff holds as much appeal as watching Disney stuff.
Hell, you may even like NGE, it does feature lots of stuff being destroyed in between the emo people being vindictive to each other.

However, I still think its silly to think of Anime as a seperate genre. Its just films and TV. The advantage is that what would cost a vast effects budget in live action is more possible with animated features, both western and japanese. The bad thing is it lets pieces of crap be produved very cheaply.

Almost certainly. Out of the hundereds of hours of TV availble per day, how much of it do you consider shit? Most of it I bet. Now add to that the fact that anime is made pretty often on the cheap, often for kids/geeky teens and for a different culture. You're never going to like much of it.

Hentai. Meh, its cartoon porn. You think the west doesn't have plenty of that too?

Nobby, I'm a fan too, but as you can see, these aren't the best forums to talk about it. You'll end up with 80% of the thread being posts about how stupid you or your choice of entertainment happens to be in someone else's opinion.

Bah, don't like anime. All those big eyes and poor english translations make my flesh crawl.
Depends on the type and style of the anime, many have realistic proportions.
Again the style often dictates the type of story told.
As for Engrish. Translations these days are very good.

Real entertainment is derived from music, poetry, films and rumpy pumpy.
This brings us to the whole fundamental debate between anime and live action.

Due to various circumstances within the US (the McArtharthyite era), 'comics' lost their place as an adult medium, and was relegated to something that was intended for childeren. Something from which it has yet to really recover.
Manga and later anime did not fall victim to this pigeon-holeing. It remained a form of media as of importance as any other. Though it has been subject to a lot of censorship it has maintained it's place as an adult medium.

You have to understand that the influence of Hollywood on manga and anime is enormous. Before and especially after a cirtain event American and British films started appearing in Japan, showing a completely new way of story telling, at least in a visual way. This especially helped because of a manga artist called Osamu Tezuka the so-called 'Grandfather' of manga, who saw how the camera work and visual mechanisms could be brought to paper, doing away with the old comic strip style.

The problem we run into is a type of egotism within anime (especially the non-japanese community), that it is a superior art form. Most people are unaware of it's roots and take it's visual freedom as a sign of something better, rather than something that hung on where elsewhere is fell down.
True, anime/manga does allow you to visualise and therfore explore situations that are unavailiable to live action. One person on this forum once said that the matrix = anime.
Not so. More it is that we have reached a point where CG is capable of visualising what anime has been able to do all this time. Even animes now frequently use CG and other 3D effects, there are of course animes that are entirely CG such as the Final Fantasy films.
Hopefully we should be seeing more live action work exploring themes that were previously closed to it.

Though I am an 'anime fan', unlike a lot of others I don't hold it in any regard over any other art form, it's just one of many.

I'd recommend to anyone a book called: Manga - Sixty years of Japanese comics, by Paul Gravett.

And from what I've seen, the majority of it most certainly is the equivalent of brown pancakes you see amongst a field full of cows.
It is. The majority of animes and mangas out there are a bunch of arse, or highly speciallised that most people have no interest in them (and of course there's shit ones in all specialist subjects).
Finding the good ones can take wallowing in poo for a while.

Yep, didn't work like that in the slightest and there's nothing wrong in the way it's told. It's actually, an original art form in and of itself.

I hated Eva. And don't you doubt that I understood it. I understood what was going on fine. But a cast full of unlikable characters, plus some not-actually that creep conspiracy stuff and some butt-ugly mecha does not enjoyment make for me. CMaster
16-11-06, 13:32
Yeah, you didn't get it, and obviously never seen the end.

I refer to the end as in episodes 25 and 26. End of evangelion was logically inconsistent and made to appease action-hungry fans who were wining about what was going on "in the real world" - and hence didn't understand that within the plot that wasn't really important. You think I didn't see all the analysis of psycology or the idea that we were looking at the struggles etc of people to relate, and so on? Oh, I saw it all. It just didn't entertain me. I like to have at least some characters who I don't want to stab in the face in my entertainment.
