Pantho if you've got that kind of money to spend on a new PC, I would recommend that you go for the Dual Core Conroes (Intel) with DDR2 ram and the nice new Nvidia 650X motherboard with a new Geforce 8 series card!

If you want me to put you a list together for an alternative system setup just give me a shout!

Geforce 8 series card!:o Now I'm really falling behind. I bet there will be GF9 before I get around to upgrading again. Though.. all I play now is NC and Civ3 so. Eh who cares.

With the change to PCI-E, if I want to upgrade and not waste money on things, it'll need to be practically an entire new machine. It's really put me off due to the cost. I'm really milking it with my current PC, it's almost 5 years old :) Still it was pretty much top of the line then, and is still not doing all that bad. Have upgraded the CPU and Memory since I got it mind.

I could go GF6800 GT/Ultra or 7800GS... better ram but only to OC more that's about it. Not worth it really so I'm in the same boat as you numb. I could go PCI-E for about $400 if I got a placeholder gfx card.. but I'm happy with my comp as it is now. Maybe next summer. :)

I need a new comp, but I have no money. I suppose I'll be using my 5 year old system for a bit longer....

ebuyer.com :p

but i dont like intel Delphi, never have really :( -

I do however like AMD and ATI :p -

Ive not kept upto date, or even looked at computer website for 18 years, since i got my Video card - But i seem to remember that intel are better for number crunching and ATI for Graphical gaming.

My last PC is only about 18 months old, but has no PCIE Slot, so kinda fucked with mobo, and CPU is diff pin, so that mobo/gpu/cpu.... Might as well build a new PC lol -

Currently the intel processor wipe the floor with the AMD dual cores, we'll see what happens when the 4x4 cores come out, butI have to say my next PC will be an Intel!

As for ATI vs Nvidia, I have to say that currently I only like Nvidia, and thats due to a really bad run of ATI cards that havent worked... lol

ok- ill go play with a Intel spec... but in my experience they have been very , very expensive....

you received a pm :)

The Intel E6300/6400 are really cheap atm, if I was going to, that's what I would build a new PC around. Plus they overclock like crazy so I hear. Aaaand they perform better than 'equal' AMD chips. Go figure.

with regards to intel chips dont buy yet... The Quad cores are due out in a week or so which should bring the price of the dual cores down - also dual cores are cheaper and work better and faster than the AMD equivalents!

... The shoes on the other foot.

Just got this today, it's 75% formatting as I write:

Intel 975x " badaxe " rev 306
E6600 boxed
2 gb Corsair 6400c (800mhz)
WD 250 Sata 3 16mb cache
ATI 1900xt 512mb
Masscool Air Conditioned case

The install so far has been flawless, can't wait for the show. I'm putting Vista RC2 on it.

Total $2300 cdn. pricey, yeah, but my first quality gear, at least since the x41 tablet :)

I got an e6300 for £100. Shame the FSB is limited to 300 by the bios, otherwise i'd be on at least 2.3Ghz as opposed to 2.1Ghz. I regret not getting a gigabyte 965p DS3, my Asrock ConroeXfire esata2 performs just as well, but it just can't overclock good because of the bios.

Yeah, almost 200 a stick. I'm getting -8-10 celsius off the peltier (air con) right now, just doing intel downloads / patches at default setup. The core's at 42c. I'm liking this 300 dollar case, really well made, with a top 460w psu included.

see , the ram at $200 a stick i could live with -

a $300 case i find pointless, the PSU and case i mentioned will do the same job for about 10/20% of that ....

Absolutely, the case was just for fun, the air conditioning is a funny bit of technology I just had to check out, and it seems to work!

ok well, i just took a peep at Intel CPU's -

And fuck me im confused -

Most i wanna spend on cpu is around 180GBP - $300

Intel 4 600
Intel 4 800
Intel 4 950
WTF! AMD make it so simple lol -

Little help finding a nice CPU plz :) -

Sammson
08-11-06, 05:41
Well, the cpus all seem to overclock like mad, so your only decision is to go from and e6400 with 2mb cache to a e6600 with 4mb cache, about $100 difference in price, about 250 or 350. The boxed w/ fan/hs is a little more $50 or so.

So, extra 100 for the extra 2mb cache? Not much use now but the future when games can utilize the dual cores fully, it prolly will. Of course by then the e6600 will prolly be a hundred bucks total lol, so maybe an e6400 is a better price performance buy. Then again, the e6300 is not far behind :P Let ur wallet decide, you'll be happy either way.

hmm Nice -

Cheaper than the AMD i was going to pick -

Last Intel i had was a Intel 3 - 550 mhz.... my 3rd ever pc :) -

Secon was a 166MHZ MMX

First i dont remember, only about 6-12 months before that one tho.... Yea i now, i didnt get a PC before most kids in the neighbourhood - *cries*.

-edit

e6400 has been Discontinued by my supplier... Strange little company is ebuyer-

BUT!

the link above sounds nice - set to 267, it runs at 35C, with 45C max load, and runs at 4.0ghz per core -

Nice :) - Now i need a board i can overclock with

giga191

Buy memory that can match the speed of the FSB (core 2 duos runs best with 1:1 ram:fsb). I think all core 2 duos start at 266mhz which means ddr2 533, if you OC a little then ddr2 667, if you OC a lot then you need ddr2 800 with some overclocking potential. Ram is fawking expensive these days, mine cost more than my CPU :D. I don't think this applies if you get a mobo that can change the multiplier.

Terayon

You should get a conroe over that 930.
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=433&model2=439&chart=169

Seagate are generaly faster then western digital HD's, but i dont know if there is a price diffrence from where your buying. None over here though so probably not :) . And besides that they have a better warrenty and longer life from my experiances.

And i dont know about the case realy but im pretty sure that power supply from casecom isent good. Antec includes good power supplys with some of their cases.

Best bang for the buck today is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600.
Look around anandtech.com & tomshardwareguide for performance/price tests
and intel vs. amd dual core tests. Intel is the way to go with dual cores, as
someone said above we'll see about quad cores. I've had AMD's for about 5-6
years now but by the looks of it the next one will be an Intel.

See i wanted a Cor2Duo , but ebuyer are not selling them anymore-

Got me wondering

, see im a MASSIVE fan of AMD. But im fed up of saying how much better they are, without trying a recent Intel :) -

I want a Intel i can clock to hell ,.... Proberly Blow up, cry, and use my other PC again

get e6300 and a gigabyte 965 ds3, maybe some 800mhz memory, or good 667mhz which can usually clock up to 800mhz. You should be able to get to 2.8ghz no sweat. You can also OC 800mhz memory and get an even higher OC, but i'm not sure what the limitations are.

Heh, yeah agreed, been some dx10 issues, ati beta vista drivers fixed a lot, still so so tho. It was only a test anyways, I'll wipe it again in a few.

Fps is pinned everywhere in Neocron tho:lol: it looks sweet on max settings (ati and neocron)
