THN: Neocron Google Search Engine

How many times have you put Neocron word into google search, and got back nothing useful?

Recently, Google announced the ability to customise their search engine, and included it in your own webpages, so I had a go at creating one for Neocron, and found it quite easy!

At the moment, the search needs tweeking a bit as it only includes results from websites that I specify, so far I've included.

Ok added them, and all the fansites listed on http://ng.neocron.com/index.php?id=87 I've done a bit of tweaking to exclude some pages in the official forums, as they are duplicated results. (The forum gets the most results atm)

I've been thinking about that one, since it has got English, German and French sites. May have to play around with the Google search API

It's not a translation issue, it's an issue of having 3 languages in one set of search results. If I say I can only speak German, I don't want to see the English or French sites.

Seperating the NC forum results will be a bit difficult, since it's a multilanguage site with no clear seperation.

There are other issues, like the NC forum comes back with too many hits, for irrelevant information.

Even though I was impressed that I could get the custom google search engine working on the THN within about 30 mins, even if it did involve a few tricks and a bit of direct DB editing to put the google code in.

I shall start thinking about Neocron Google Search Engine version 2, but that will have to wait until after the items DB version 1.1 and 1.2

Ok, figured out how to do this. Needed to create severall XML files and add some labels to mark each site in the right language, but I knew I had to go this way at some point. Future note to self if you search for "Brammers" you know you have broken the search engine. :eek:

It can also filters on Items DB websites, but since Google hasn't indexed the THN items DB yet, http://www.sheriff-hardy.de/ is going to be on top for a little while! :p

Finally the French site list has a grand total of 2 entries. :confused: (Philchow if you know any more let me know!)

Yep, this one (http://neocron.mondespersistants.com) is also a french fan site but not up to date though.

No not paid at all, I turned off adwords, and also Googles adwords system is paid per click on an advert.

The only "advertising" on the THN is banners for the game or various vendors ingame. Most of them goto KK's trial download pages, but it's very easy to put your own clan banner up for free advertising of your clan. (And it will link to your clan pages)

So if you want your banner up there send me a PM.

If Google want to pay me for using their search engine, they can but someone paying me to use their product when it costs them money to run and develop makes no commerical sense. If you got a link to Google paid search engine placement, let me know.

On the subject of the search engine itself, how are people finding the results?

Google AdSense for search, place a google search thingy on your webpage and people can search directly from your website, it will of course display ads which people can click and that will give you profit.
