you know, i alwyas figured a crock woulda got him years ago. never thought about a stringray.
Yea! Same, Always thought a croc or a snake would get em, but a stingray
He diced with death too many times.
I wonder what odds the bookies would have given you on a stingray to give the fatal blow?
Article (http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/crocodile-man-reported-dead/2006/09/04/1157222051512.html) from The Sidney Morning Herald.
I think most people would have thought a croc would have gotten him in the end or atleast a snake, the stingray is very random indeed especially since its only been reported to have happened to two other people. Quite a unique death for a very unique entertainer and person all round.
Some of the stuff he's done may have been crazy but he's done alot for Australia Zoo following on with his dads love of the wild.
R.I.P Steve Irwin.
He has done loads for Austrailian wildlife, but I think he will be remember more for his antics with crocodiles.
I remember the 1st time I saw him on TV. He was with a deadly snake and for 2 minutes I just stared in amazment that he was risking his life, before my fear of snakes made me shudder and turn over to another channel.

Im sorry dude, thats going into my all time greatest book of quotes XD.
but seriously yeah, it sucks that we loose such a lively spirit, not every day we have someone like that around the earth, especially one like him who raise awareness about our planet and its inhabitants.
We'll miss you croc hunter :(

they don't seem that aggressive, he must have been very unlucky to have even been attacked, let alone die from it.
They aren't aggressive, they are pretty much passive. I think it was more of an accident that he got hit by that tail, the tail is poisonous btw. The poison itself is not that dangerous to humans but since that tail struck him in the heart, it was fatal. Poor family :/

Very unfortunate accident, he was a true character.
RIP.
Several bits I have picked up from various news reports...
The spine on the end of the stingray's tail can be 10 inches long.
It 'twitches' or stiffens when the stingray is startled.
Our fearless friend got a little too friendly with a stingray, getting on it's back.
The stingray's spine/stinger went under his ribcage to hit his heart.
Basically his bravado killed him. As said:
He died as he lived, pissing off dangerous animals.

hahaha Nice picture. I read about that on the BBC web site this morning, kinda shocked about it. But yeah, as someone mentioned, he totally pissed off animals to show their features and instincts to the world, it was just a matter of WHEN would they seek their revenge? I always found him to be a bit of an annoying bloke on TV, a bit too hyperactive and over the top for my liking (which is why quite a lot of the Australians I know would be like "oh god not him again" when he was mentioned), but he did a lot for Australia and wildlife in general. Still a decent guy though. R.I.P
No more spam or off topic discussion in this thread please, or it will be closed.

Dammit. He was like a modern-day Han Solo.

best ideals ever.
i always thought sting rays are magestic type creatures. but they do pack quite a punch
Pretty sad and unfortunate incident.
His work was actually how to communicate to the rest that animals and nature need to be loved and respected, and he did this in a fun way. He will be missed. Irony is, he was killed by his friends, and animals lost one of their best supporters. I do wish his work will have followers
I wont miss him. True, he DID do good Things for Animals (especially in Australia), but i didnt like him the from the Start. He didnt respect the Animals he "encountered" in his Series. I also thought just WHEN Nature will strike back.
Never trust wild animals....
Really sad news this.
The way he approach animals in the wild is really wrong in my eyes,
but I got a lot of respect for his passion for nature. He lived the way
he wants to live.
About 3 months I'm off to australia for a year, I also planned to visit his
own Zoo there. If its your lucky day you can find steve there.
But the Zoo and also the world have to do it without steve from now on :(
Rest In Peace Steve

How can you say he did good things for animals, then say he didnt respect them? Of course he respected them, hence why he had all of his limbs in one piece.
