... things like design view, automatic image maps, and the like?

I'm a bit concerned about Dreamweaver's 30-day trial (and the annoying requirement of having to supply email and register with Adobe to get the trial), so I'm hoping someone knows of something similiar to Dreamweaver's capabilities. I know, since I'm asking for free software, I shouldn't expect *that* much, but I really don't want to do it all by hand, too clunky for me that way, especially in regards with image maps for linking.

I used to use Webpad (http://www.dzsoft.com/webpad.html), but it probably doesn't have all the functionality you're after.

Have a look at Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org/), and maybe look for the right plugins (http://www.eclipseplugincentral.com/) for it. I'll confess I've never tried the HTML addins, as tend to cut any pure HTML by hand, or cheat and use Dreamweaver.

Notepad++ is great, I use it for everything actually :). Fuck those LUA editors etc. nothing beats notepad++ ;).

I always prefer to use VIM (VI iMproved) when i'm editing source, but only after personalizing the highlighting, by default it's quite nasty. For more basic file editing I usually use pico for obvious reasons, the word "pico" meaning "very small" should be explanation enough. :p

Just had a look at Notepad++ and VIM beats it anyday. ;) Simple, fast and powerful command line programs for the win.

This isn't exactly what you were asking for but I believe if you're going to use a WYSIWYG HTML editor you should be taken outside and shot in the back of the head. Take the time to learn HTML, CSS, and anything else you need to know, get a decent and simple text editor, and you won't need to waste time fraffing around with some WYSIWYG program.

Edit: Re-reading the first sentence of my last paragraph it sounds a bit, well, harsh. I just heavily detest any program that lets a person scimp heavily on their project (ie. allowing the user to learn feck all because it's just "click this button... appropriate code inserted"). :p

Just did a random search and found Amaya (http://www.w3.org/Amaya/). Makes my post worth while for you I guess. :)
