Ello!

2 hours ago I restarted my computer because my modem cut out with bit torrent, Like it always does.

Upon logging on I found that explorer.exe wouldn't start and it's the same for all the usernames on this comp.

I have to open all my programms though the task manager and it's fucking annoying...

What should I do?

I've restarted twice already.

Restart 3 more times then re-tie your Shoelace and It'll work.

I don't know whats wrong with your explorer.. but you should fix your torrent problem too.

If bittorrent causes your modem to have problems it usually means you're making too many connections that your modem can't handle. Try and bring the maximum amount of connections to peers down to say, 150 and try it then. Keep going lower until it doesn't cause problems. Also, try disabling DHT.

Explorer might have been borked by the sudden cut-out. Did you check your disk for consistency?

EDIT - By the way, as you can see, i'm shite at this kind of thing.

Do you mean EXPLORER.EXE or IEXPLORE.EXE? EXPLORER.EXE being tampered with is a strong sign malicious code is at work, as EXPLORER.EXE is a well known autostart method for various virii and trojans (not to mention some of the more unscrupulous spyware programs out there).

Reformat. Works every time. Gets rid of virus and spyware aswell.

Have you tried system restore? I'd reformat tbh, probably less painful.

That certainly sounds like malware to me, explorer.exe autostart, plus killing your taskman.exe to stop you ending any processes. My suggestion would be to backup and reformat unless you really know what you're doing and think you can take on the rogue software yourself.

ok, I found that when I log on, explorer doesn't start, but I can use taskmanager no prob.

If I try to explore a .ZIP file, explorer starts and shit loads of programs start up, (my start up programs)
when this happens, Task manager does it's split second act again.

any help

ps, little maths question, if someone buys a twig for £22500, I give him £1000 towards the twig, how much of a percentage have I paid towards it ?

Unless you are slightly backward, which obviously shouldnt be the cas....wait nevermind.

You could attempt to get rid of it yourself, run Windows in safe mode so the Malware doesnt boot itself up then download and run lots of anti-virus/spyware programs in Safemode, possibly search on the internet for explorer.exe viruses and try and pinpoint it, once you do remove the file, go into the registry and find/delete any registry keys related to the virus so it cant boot itself up.

However if you dont know what you're doing, I wouldn't attempt the registry part or anything overly technical.

kk, last question before I finally go to sleep, Where in system32 is "Paint" ?

Rob01m

Nobby, do an automatic Repair function from the Windows XP CD, if it doesn't have SP2 you'll need to reinstall that, but that's not the point... If you can repair windows, then quickly do your backup and reformat.

If that doesn't work, then just backup what you can and reformat.

Uh as for your question it's mspaint.exe in the system32 directory.

ok im sure alot of virii close/ stop you from opening taskmanager.
But it sounds very much like one of the old bad ones, sasser i think.

If you can get in at all, even in safe mode, Find anything that looks suss under any folder, or if you feel like it check the registry too, but there has to be files.
Once something is found find out the name of the virus and simply go to the symantec site.... you may still need to format, but once you've run the tool (if there is one for what you have) you will be able to backup everything in considerable comfort, but a format is still almost always needed to fully remove the shit. :(

ok well I installed a new Windows XP on my HDD...

Seems no problems atm and I still have all my files.

One question, where is the hidden file which records all the servers you've saved into Ventrilo?

I have like 12 servers I need to recover...

It's "ventrilo2.ini", located at %APPDATA%\Ventrilo\

"%APPDATA%" is an environment variable, usually C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\

This is probably too little too late, but in XP there's a command line utility called tskill - and you can use it to kill processes much the same way you would in task manager, for when task manager is closed automatically.

I don't know how to get a list of all running processes in a command window though. I know it's too late, but if anyone else has a similar problem it may be worth investigating more. I took a screenie of the task manager process window before it shut down last time I was knackered like that.
