(Before anyone says this is Illegal, piracy etc, I'm talking about the Bittorrent and P2P service which Isn't Illegal, the only thing which is Illegal is what people use it for, which I suppose is the same for a lot of real life and Internet services these days).

Does anyone use Bittorrents? (not asking what you use them for).

The entire workings of it are driving me insane, inperticularly the Download speeds.

On most torrents I only get about 20kbps (every beta game I've been involved in when its been available on a torrent by the developers are the same), I've enabled all the ports on firewalls and routers and the tracker ports but I never seem to get more then that, and I hear speeds of 100-200kbps are common. Plus theres about 120 seeds in total, but I only get 1-5kbps or so off 5-10 people.

Im definatly not an expert on Bittorrents, I actually don't have a clue, so does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

I dont have any clues but i do get about 300kbps when my connection is behaving and there's enough seeds :p

Ok, im in NO WAY a wiz with this but i DO have some theories (Yes i use torrents as well)

At a time my download rate was, rubbish to say the least but my upload rate was insane, so i put a limit on my upload rate and whatch know, my download rate went up.

Even if there are many seeders, ya also need to check how many are leeching, altho 100 seeders might be nice if 3000 people are trying to download it the speed will be rubbish, also if they have a limit on their upload it will be even worse.

Just my 2 cents.

Most people would prefer to download from the seeders rather than become one. People set the upstream limit to the lowest their client will allow, and as a result, unless you have a good amount of seeders, you'll generally get a pretty awful downstream rate. I do the very same thing, but only because my bandwidth is very limited as it is, and would prefer to use as little upstream as possible.

I use bit tornado to limit my upload as much as possible, eg- dialup settings, max Upload is set to 3KB/sec and my Download speed goes from 40kb to 230KB!

And that ladies and gentlemen is the reason that torrent downloading speeds suck. If everyone does that, theres no bandwidth to share....

If u have a fast internet connection, why don't u upload? I don't get it. This is how p2p dies!

Opening ports 6881 to 6889 will increase your download speed alot, limiting your upload speed is also a must, but not to the extreme. I have it limited to 11KB/s up while I'm downloading, when it finishes it automatically becomes unlimited if there are no other torrents downloading. I just set it up while I'm asleep/out so it doesn't bother me having a shity ping.

Yeah when i'm at home playing games or surfing i limit my uploads to half my total upload speed which is about 15k and i get anything from 20 to 200k down.

That was the first thing I did Mkv, still hasnt changed.

This is because of how TCP/IP works. Every Inbound packet you recieve is always acknowledged with small outbound packet, if your outbound connection is full of outbound upload data (from the Torrent) then the latency of the TCP ACKs (Acknowledgement signals) will rise, causing poor efficiency (if my memory serves correctly).

80% of your max. Upload rate is perfekt. Everything above is going to kill your DL Speed. But if you are below, you'll do no good for the p2p network. That's how it works.

If you want high download rates be so fair that others have this chance, too.

Oh and if you finished DLing, don't delete the torrent file and keep uploading 'till your ratio is at 1.xx!

just my 2 cents

p2p was invented so shy ppl didnt have to go to the store to buy their porn.
now they dont have to be embarrased cuz no1 knows theyre downloading it.

hell yea im a loyal custo.. *cough* downloader :D

Try Azureus. It has the most options I've seen ofr a BT program, not to mention it's simple to use. You can alter the max/min number of connections, upload and download speed, the ports and most importantly, perform a NAT test.

DJ, Im using Azureus, but I get red/yellow smilies, never the green :(
plus my dad wont let me configure the router cuz he thinks ill fuck up i-net :p

(and its not for porn.. its for movies / albums)
(and porn)

but then again:

btw how can i get green smilies? I set my port to 52525 or something, says NCAT error..
errrr NAT error

if your on ADSL/DSL connection then uplaoding at full speed will limit your download, but if you cut your upload the Torrent Tracker may limit your download. :)

Crazy, some British I.S.Ps throttle common p2p & torrent ports, so even if your firewall / router has opened up those ports you won't get a good download speed. Try changing the default ports to something in the upper range (like 45678 for e.g.) and see what happens.

You might also want to try u-torrent (http://www.utorrent.com/). Unlike most torrent clients it only needs to have one port open, even for multiple downloads, which makes it also a little more secure because you don't have to open up multiple ports. Works okay too ;)

Vae (and anyone else with NAT issues): Click. (http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/NAT_problem)

Azureus only uses a single port too.

solve ur NAT probs. open the port(s) ur chosen BT client uses on ur router.

my highest dl ever is 221kbps on slow city dsl, with a maintained average high of 161 kbps.

It's only a piece of shit if you're a noob and don't know how to set it up properly. ;)

I regularly get speeds between 200-500 KBPS, depending on the amount of seeds, and I don't have any fancy T1 sitting in my room or anything. Just a pretty good cable connection.

I use Azuerus, since it came out. Never had a problem with it other than it sometimes doing nothing for 1-2 mins then going back up to what it was doing.

I was allways getting shite download speeds, tried the suggested settings from the wiki and now 800kb/s speeds aren't uncommon.

I'm on 8mbit, 1mbit up
Limited upload to about 80%, if I let them use my entire bandwidth I can't download myself and my pc becomes a heap of thick shit

Does anyone use Bittorrents? (not asking what you use them for).Yes, of course.

By the way: There are many legal Torrents. Linux-Distributions, for example. Or some VMWare-Player-Virtual-Machines. Blizzard also uses this Technique in order to distribute their Patches for WoW.

Try to limit the Upload to a rate, which let remain a litte bit free bandwith in the upload channel. This should help a little bit.

errrr NAT errorYou need to configure the router.

NAT rules to be exact, you gotta open up the port used by your azureus for both UPD and TCP connections and you'll get green smilies. :)

Can´t agree with you, Azureus works perfectly well, I usually dowload in about 1-1.5 MB/s and upload in 400-500 KB/s.. never had any problems with it.

EDIT : I´m on a ADSL2+ connection 21Mbit down, 2Mbit up

Ive done it before, only I cant remember how, it was like a year ago or something.
Ah well, I get red/yellow smilies and they still downloading with 20 kb/s up to 150ish.. aint that bad :D

There isn't really anything wrong with Azerus, it's just that uTorrent does everything Azerus does, but uses a fraction of the system resources. I'd probly swap over if I wasn't so lazy and couldn't be bothered to reconfigure a diff client lol

Takes our useless country (England/GB) years to get anything right, or done, and we still fail. Look at the useless transport systems (train, bus, road conditions for that matter, useless road signs and road bumps are just fucking pathetic in some places), STILL! Examples are endless.

The UK's net infrastructure is actually better than many countries (or at least much more consistant, and with better potential), it's just that people (not just BT) have been very sluggish with the rolling out of services.
Only countries with dedicated, modern networks (like Japan, a couple of nordic countries and south Korea) have a higher capacity.

I'm by no means an expert at the bit torrentz, but speeds seem to depend entirely on the ratio of seeders to leachers and obviously this varies from torrent to torrent.

Also, with most clients your downstream speed is also linked to how fast you upload, ie the higher your upload speed the higher your download speed should be.

I prefer using the emule client/ed2k network myself as it is seems generally faster and less hassle for my needs...
