Is the rest of what you have compatible strikes me as the burning issue. Best thing to do is let people know what you already have, so the tech-heads amongst us can off thier advice on where to go, and what the limitations are.

Looks pretty good. You have PCIe on your mobo? Also, the vidcard may be a 6800XT which in the nvidia world is the nerfed 6800.

im fairly sure it will all work with my system...as of the current Nvidia card i have in, and the ATI i used in the past. That would have an AGP slot, you won't be able to use that vidcard you picked out, the best you could do would be a 7800GS/GSO (which is better anyways) You'll have to poke around Sony's website to see if your mobo will support that much ram (1GB sticks at any rate) I'm betting it doesn't, get a couple 512MB sticks of kickass ram instead.

i found 3 sticks of 512 PCI ram for 10 bucks on ebay, and a 512 mb vid card for a few hundred instead of 500 from ebay. im not sure completely about em yet though

Fine ill just say it.

Memory is an incredably bad way to judge a videocard alone by. You can get a 6600 512 videocard that will cost a bit more then a 6600gt 128 and perform half as well. There are alot of things to look for in a videocard so ill just recomend nvidia at the moment (as much as i hate to admit it). I agree with glok on the 7800gs.

Next its also not a good idea to buy ram just becouse its cheap. You should be looking at your motherboard manual for its memory it officialy supports. Some motherboards are realy picky.

Generic hynix, samsung, or infinion are all good to get if your not a super enthusiast. Want somthing a little nicer then go for ocz or a similar well known company. Do not buy ram from say a company called v-data that noone has ever heard of. Do not buy ram that advertises that it has gold contacts boldly.

Also somthing to keep in mind. Kingston value chips as far as i know use alot of diffrent types of actual memory modules. They are usaly incredably crappy. Slow and alot of mobo's dont like them.

And i have no idea what PCI ram is.

the 512 card is an Nvidia ;) Nvidia FX6600 512MB PCI-E 512 VideoCard V56 and the ram is Nvidia i beleive

the ram does not appear to be reliable. i think ill just drop 100 bucks and get 2 gig sticks or something of the such form newegg. (after im sure its compatible)

Don't buy any parts. Take your comp to CompUSA and tell them to upgrade it for you.

XFX Geforce 6800 XTreme PVT42EUDE3 Video Card

From what i've heard, 6800XTs are crappy cards and that you should avoid them (meaning crappy performance for the price tag)
Go for 6600GT or x800GTO

Yes dont get a 512mb 6600. Get a 6600gt with any amount of ram, even 128mb, will be way better. Most games cant even use 256mb of ram, and barely use 128mb if even that. Just remember the amount of memory is alot less important then most people think. Its probably the most common mistake people make about videocards.

And if your looking used check out the hardoc forums. I bought a 6600gt just the other day for 100usd for a friend of mine shipped to canada.

and then your card costs 4 times less in the next few months because it isn't the best one any more  (but i'm sure the extra frame per second was worth it)

i just get a peak in.. sorry if i missed it.. but people say the first card won't work cus its a pcie.. but the second card you picked off the 6600 is a pcie card to.. thus it also won't work :p

you need a AGP card. if your comp is 3 years old there is no way in hell it has a pcie interface on it.. hell it prob be a socket 478 p4 to judging by the 2.4 ghz and the age of the thing.

anyway you deffo need a AGP card.. i would go for a 6800 GT or something i used a 6800 GT for a year and it was a uber card.. if you dun have the cash for one get a 6600 GT. dun look at the ram it has.. 256 is more then enuff for anything.

on the second thing.. 2 gb of ram might be an overkill. but pretty sure the board will take 2gb ram with no problems. but you always could run a little program like CPU-Z and find out what type your mobo is and look up the info on the intarweb :x

99% of the servers dun even have a monitor attached to them 99% of the time they all administrated remote.. and if they do have a monitor its on a 8 mb onboard vid.

thus a server wouldn't make even a shit game pc :p

PCI is the older interface.
AGP came after PCI (accelerated graphics port, which is why it might be called AGP X8).
PCI-E is the newest interface which is X16 instead of AGP X8

it might be worth getting a newish motherboard wich has 478 cpu slot and pcie adn getting a 7600gt for 150 and 1gig ( is it ddr?)of ram that would do u for about another 2 years as there not that expencive

imho.. since its 3 years old he already has 478 board.. if you would upgrade that big now then why don't just get a 775 proc to. just get a complete new system. buying a pcie mobo and ram and a gfx now and maybe have your proc die on you in a few months so you have to buy another board and proc won't work :p

if you do it do it good ;x
