A lot of people are gonna call me nuts..

But I´d say:

-SuSe
-Debian
-Mandrake

And I suggest you use the graphical version, KDE or GNOME, think KDE is the easiest one of them.

And i think it´s CTRL+ALT+F1-6 to change viewmode if you want to go to text mode at some point.

Ok, looking into those now, thanks naimex.

However, I think I might have to get a new DVD burner  due to some Shitty anti-copy software and Im not to sure if it works :(

You can play with linux a bit, and then try macOSx if/when its gonna get hacked/released to the public. first intel macs are coming soon, march - may

The install is a little bit technical i guess, but I found Slackware 10 to be a prety sexy beast. For first time use, no matter what some crazy people say, do not go with a distro like Gentoo. Manual installs suck bigtime.

You also need to pick a GUI for some distros, KDE, GNOME, Flux, etc.

I would suggest Ubuntu or Fedora Core 4. Slackware's fairly good too.

Google around for some tutorials first though, and read up :)

If you just want a "play" and to see what the fuss is about, maybe even a live CD such as Knoppix would be better. You don't even have to install them. Just boot up, and pretend you are a linux expert! They don't affect your windoze installation, and you have the chance to see if you like it before you make the choice.

I use SuSE 10.0, its sexeh, and on DVD and 64bit, so all my dreams come true. What you really need though is a Windows CD, to reinstall your boot sector when you decide to remove linux :p

Im no linux expert by miles, but i would suggest fedora core 4, or is 5 out now?
Anyway, it's an easy instalation, no fuss, and you get to see what it's all about,
and then you can decide.

Slackware is usually recomender for the advanced user from what I know, wich
is not very much mind you.

To save yourself some hassles, check to see if your hardware is supported, nvidia/ati got their own drivers now, but modems are a pain in the arse, my old PCI ADSL one only worked in Fedora, not Mandrake or SuSE, I have SuSE installed now which seems to get all my stuff working properly, but make sure!

Oh, its best to download drivers from Windows, nothing like installing Linux only to find your network/modem dont work so you cant download the drivers  and some wont install (SuSE) unless you have a network card installed, and Fedora (DVD) refused to install at all >.<

Oh, Pen/Paper, write down errors - google ;)

I started using Mandrake, however I felt that it was a bit... uh... Windows like, felt like I wasn't being shown the gory details that I wanted, however I found Slackware to be a bit too gory to begin with, although at some point I will probably go back to Slack when I get a bit more Linux knowledge. Going to be trying out SuSe at some point soon (downloaded, I just need a bit of free diskspace).

I'm running Fedora on a second box atm, but there is just something that I dislike about Fedora.... not really sure what it is though.

Once i have bought and built my new box - which i need the money for first - and my PCs move down the bench my secondary PC will become the play thing and im going to stick some flavour of Linux on it as ive once played with RedHat for a short while which was reasonably cool (I believe i made a thread complaining about Network problems which Lexxy helped me with :D) so this thread is quite spangly for me in terms of usefullness :)

Well for starters Ive stuck with SUSE, seems to work good for me. Secondly if your gonna install it as a second OS use Partition magic to sort the partitions out cause from the last time I used the SUSE installer to do my partitions it made partitions unreadable when using pqmagic (this was a while back though dunno if they have improved the compatability of the installer setups).

Thirdly use VMware if you cant be assed to install it as a second OS just dont use MS Virtual PC cause it dam right sucks.

Lastly if you need some nice tutorials to to linux in general get the CBT Nuggets, there pretty good.

Depends on the time you'll have to invest further, easier first steps with mandrake, but both are ok for total noobs :

Mandriva (ex Mandrake) 10.2 CD 1 (http://www.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/mandrake/official/iso/10.2/i586/Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-CD1.i586.iso)

Mandriva 10.2 CD 2 (http://www.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/mandrake/official/iso/10.2/i586/Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-CD2.i586.iso)

Mandriva 10.2 CD 3 (http://www.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/mandrake/official/iso/10.2/i586/Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-CD3.i586.iso)

Mandriva 10.2 full (Dvd version) (http://www.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/mandrake/official/iso/10.2/i586/Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-DVD.i586.iso)

Debian 3.1 CD 1 (http://linux.csua.berkeley.edu/debian-cd/3.1r0a/i386/debian-31r0a-i386-binary-1.iso)

Debian 3.1 CD 2 (http://linux.csua.berkeley.edu/debian-cd/3.1r0a/i386/debian-31r0a-i386-binary-2.iso)

What you niblet will need on the web when you finally decide to become a real socialpath and to lose all your friends and hobbies (tbh) :

A website for linux beginners (http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/consult.shtml)

Newbie Guide (http://linux-newbie.sunsite.dk/html/lnag.html)

List and presentation of several distributions (http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html)

Linux Howtos (http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html)

Nice place to get sources or packages (http://freshmeat.net/)

Redhat/Mandrake packages database (don't know if it's still up to date) (http://www.rpmfind.net/)

Very useful web-based interface for fast/simple administration (http://www.webmin.com) (works on both distros but it's available for other linux/unix too).

You just said "pen and paper write down errors and google them".

And it sounded all wrong in my head, so I made it into a little perhaps too personal joke, that obviously wasn´t understood.

But there was no offense intended.

debian is too hard for newbie i think :) lots of things needs to configure by hands from the start to the end :)
