Read this story in my latest InformationWeek Mag:

ISP Feud Blacks Out Parts Of The Internet For Customers (http://www.informationweek.com/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=HS5TF2ZOG3FKOQSNDBECKH0CJUMEKJVN?articleID=172301278)

Then found some more articles:

Level 3, Cogent call time out on peering spat (http://www.computerworld.com/networkingtopics/networking/story/0,10801,105279,00.html)

Level 3, Cogent Partners Shocked By Internet Disruption (http://nwc.networkingpipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=172300494)

Cogent, Level 3 In Standoff Over Internet Access (http://www.internetweek.com/news/171204165)

Basically, Level 3 wants money from Cogent. I believe Level 3 hosts the Neocron servers... so if their termination to Cogent, one of the major ISPs, on November 9th, a shit load of International players may be without their NC...

There are going to terminate the peering arrangment, which is basically a shortcut between networks.

All that will happen is the hops betwen Cognet and Level 3 will get a lot longer, and ping times will increase, and there will be congestion while the other networks carry the load. The "black outs" are the media trying to put fear into internet users and readers as usual.

Level 3 and Cognet are major network traffic carriers, they aren't stupid not to have backup networks.

Great, so my 300 ping will go up near 6-800?

Perfect, more reasons to play Neocron.

This is old news... been up on the news-sites about 2 weeks ago.
The peering was already cancled btw .. on Oct 5th - but shortly after they returned to routing cogent packets and set a new deadline ( Nov 9th ).
The first warning to Cogent was giben sometime in July tho' ... and it's said that Cogent had begun to restructure their routes in order to avoid level3.

FN's concern is not so wrong there ...and Brammers is unfortunately wrong.

It's not simply a "shortcut" thats taken away ...
technically it doesnt "split" the internet as there are many, many more carriers - but most of them happen to be a lot smaller and although its technically possible to re-route level3 packets through one or more smaller carriers to a destination @cogent ..it wont happen.
These providers will set their border routers to block cogent<->level3 packets (unless they are happy to pass on shitloads of foreign traffic at their own expense... most likely even paying either level3 or cogent for the traffic :p).

This is actually the very reason for level3 being so angry at cogent ... they, as a competitor, route a lot of their traffic through level3 in order to save on own infrastructure costs ...and damage the market with price-dumping. Level3 wouldnt be the first big carrier to cut-off cogent... and certainly not the last one ... but it's the biggest player out there and it will cause major problems for ppl who's ISP solely relies on cogent.

If your ISP does not use cogent routes you are not affected by this at all (at least concerning neocron ..and thats what matters, right ;) )

on another note...

Land of the dead quite well describes Neocrons situation. We ,Being the living, are trying to survive all the god damn carebares trying to suck us in.

If you cant beat em, Kick em in the nuts and run like hell.

welll the main problem Level3 was about, that the peering wasnt 50/50 related.
its all about the blingbling (price politics of cogent).... only a problem inside the US thought, but some german peers thinking about to cut too.... (german link (http://www.heise.de/newsticker/result.xhtml?url=/newsticker/meldung/64759&words=Level%203))

or you could always play battlefield 2 instead, no pokes needed, no lag, no whiners, no bugs and over 2000 servers and no si :p

figured i would give nc a try again today, did some launcher missions till some tank with a pob said he was hunting em first, told me to fuck off so i smoked him and his noob fanboi.

then got my name spammed on trade for ally pk'ing

Not true .. over the last years Cogent has taken over large parts of the european market. Those carriers / ISPs will be affected as well.

@Rozzer: You're missing the topic dude

Sorry to bump - but it's relevant to this thread...

It's November 9th - anyone notice any service interruption? Or have the ISPs decided to play nicely...

Just curious :)

I did get slightly nervous a few days ago when my ping went up to about 68 av.

Good to see this sorted though.

Got a ping of at least 160 atm. Usually it's stuck at 200. I also lag out a lot, i.e. everything stops for 2 to 60 seconds until i get back in. The longer that lag, the better chances for me to come back dead. Already got shot some times cause of that shit. :(
