Ok. I have enough cash for either an AthlonXP 3000+ (I have a 2000+) OR WinXP and a 512MB stick of ram (I have Win98 and 512MB total atm).

So... which choice do I go for?

I'm thinking WinXP and the extra ram and then some OCing goodness.

yeah... winXP seems to baby people too much (wizards everyfuckingwhere and loose security)

Windows 2000 gives you a fair bit more control.

Windows 2000 is the first and only microsoft product I did not warez.

I went to Office Max, and picked up a legit copy, I was very very proud of myself. :)

Everything else I hate.

Oh well. If I can't tame XP like I tamed 98, then I'll get 2k.

I went for the OS and ram so I can play Doom3, even if it's just to find out it sucks.

Plus I'm getting tired of the disk swapping when I play any recent game, so I need more ram, but 98 won't let me have more so I got XP. I'll get the proc in another month or so.

Believe it or not, the only pirated software I ever had was Loderunner for the Apple IIe, and that was before I even knew there was such a thing. I don't even download mp3s. Well, that's not quite true, I have warez photoshop, but so does everyone else in the civilized world. Damn... one rotten apple... O_o

If you tweak Windows XP you can get a lot from it. However, yes it does have a lot of shit services and such, but those can be disabled.

so I need more ram, but 98 won't let me have moreThat's not true. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q253912 for the cause and the solution(s).

Yeah I knew about that, but I always figured that the fix limited the amount of ram used to 512 even if you had more, in which case why bother having more... is that not the case?

Yeah I knew about that, but I always figured that the fix limited the amount of ram used to 512 even if you had more, in which case why bother having more... is that not the case?To give you a short abstract of it: You have two choices. Either you limit the memory Wintendo is managing at all (that's not what you want) or you limit the file cache size and have access to more than 512 MB RAM (that's what you want).

Cool. I was thinking about dual booting xp and 98, then decided not to, now maybe I'll do it anyways. :p
