sunny.. copy and paste is the secret to repeated characters :P
I drew a fancypants gal who's living in viarosso.
mhh.. looks like she's been in the washing machine a bit too long :p
I'd also spend a thought on redoing the colorization.
So far, I'd say the "generic DoY PE" wins teh prize :)
Oh .. and also looking forward to seeing the final Tratos Spy ...he must be very intelligent too (not Tratos, the spy of course :p) ..judging by the size of his helmet *g

Clive is right, I didnt model it. (didnt say I did :p)
I had a picture, with that "monk" in it, so I took that picture, and rendered that monk.
rendering = cutting out the model, deleting the background so you can use that model on any signature you desire.
rendering takes a while, but as I said Ive used that picture before, so I didnt have to render it for the fire apoc picture.
Hell, I wish I could model a monk like that, then I'd work for KK and we'd have kickass monks in stead of dress-less monks running around like we have these day ;)
I don't model myself, I just make signatures, make a background, take the render (model), blend it in, brush a bit, use some filters, blur it, etc etc.
Ive come to the point where I can insert AVI files.
after Ive done some more sigs, Im going for a huge project, involving a PvP movie, where I take a part of it, put it in the sig, blend it in and have a quote on it that says "You'll never die alone". that's the idea Ive got in mind.
(I would need a PvP movie where alot of people die close to eachother, FaNG PvP movie perhaps?)
but I'd love to make u a sig Asurmen, it keeps me busy as I still don't have my NC account :D
(and compared to the real GFX artists, my sigs suck bigtime, tbh)
I just LOVE grunge style. although I overdid it on this picture.
I like:
grunge
filters only.
as Sonny said, there's really ALOT of tutorials.
the way Sonny does his/her models.. that's 1337.
What I do, isn't really that hard if you know the basics.
Ive gotten this far (*cough* far *cough*) by doing tutorials.
the first few sigs I made, was an exact copy of a Tut.
And now, if I don't know how to do something, I check a tut, do 1 part of it and it's done.
I need to work on scanlines, I don't know how do to them.
some tutorials explain them, but I'm not english, and I dont understand tutorials 100%. I still dont know what some things in PS mean, I only know what effect I get.
I can go on forever really.
I loved the sigs Ascention made for the forums here, I wanted to do that kind of stuff. He said he got it all by doing it himself, experimenting iirc.
thats what Im doing now.
<3 Ascention, my inspiration source o_O ;)

coz I downloaded a render pack (errr 1600+ models) and this one was in the "unsorted game" folder.
Ive got another Prince of Persia monk lookalike, but he's got swords on him.
The monk itself is kickass, but I find it boring to use the same model on other signatures. Have to find new ones.
I cant find any of Neocron, at least not good ones, Ive tried a screenshot, didnt work :/
I had one for my nc1 PE Caladbolg, it was a guy from driv3r, with his gun pointing towards the viewer. added some effects, some animated rain, looks like a PE with a gun, in my case a Wyatt.
Think Ive still got it somewhere, have to search for it.
Clive is right, I didnt model it. (didnt say I did :p)

In 3D graphics terms (which is pertinent here because the picture is a 3d model), rendering = the final step in producing a 3d image in which the models in your 3d program (such as 3ds max or maya) are given textures, lighting, anti-aliasing and such. In 2d drawing, the quality difference between ink outlines and fully colored / photoshopped pictures would be a good comparison. Rendering something means that you have the mesh, textures and program, it does not mean you made it, but it means you have them.
In video editing (not a direct comparison but useful as an example), rendering is when the video you're editing moves into final form as the transitions are finalized (they don't work in edit mode until you render), compressed movie clips are actually inserted and stuff like that.
From those two examples, rendering seems like it's always the final step in a process. In fact one of the definintions of render is: "To convert (graphics) from a file into visual form, as on a video display."
In conclusion... I don't think your usage of the term "render" is accurate nor correct... the term "cut out" might be better. :p

jfyi... the technically correct & common term for cutting out something from a picture is "to crop" or if you like, "mask" ..tho' thats more what you do prior to the crop :)
Besides... if I publish a picture where the main eye-candy is not done by me, but a copy & paste effort, I point to that fact. ;)

Guess the term crop would work, since that's technically a way to do it (select then crop) but there are other ways like erasing everything else or using various filters. Mask is something entirely different however.

Tbh, Im not english, I dont know EVERY word there is.
a model like that was, afaik, called a "render" and to cut it out was called "rendering".
thats wot they say on the GFX sites.
But I'll go with "cut out" for this time ;)
and frankly I dont know what render means, just knew what it does.
same goes for most Photoshop terms.
mask, vector, gradient.. wtf is a gradient o_O I only know what it does, sort of (Never used it though).
And I cba to read it all with my English2Dutch dictionary, soz :D
@ ake, in most sigs from LOTS of people, the "render" aka model isnt his/hers. cutting is very difficult if you wanna get good quality, specially the hair. the monk I had, easy to cut out. but if you take, IE a rl girl, try cutting her out, it's a serious bitch (the cutting, not the girl).
and I never said I was any good at it, I just like doing it o_O (same like sex  )

Sorry I haven't posted anything recently. I've been pretty busy recently!
I've been trying to work on my male physique and body structure seeing as I think I'm pretty good in the female anatomy.
I didn't have enough time to finish the entire thing, but with the way it looks... it probably would look better as an unfinished thing (like the last thing I did) although this was done purely for practice on the male structure.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/psimonkguy.jpg
He's supposed to be a psi monk but I don't think his build is frail enough to exemplify the whole 'mind over matter' motif that the psi monks seem to have. He's lean and athletic, maybe more of a spy/PE physique.
His face is really kind of odd looking but it's rather intended. I have always felt that psi monks should be grotesque looking or else there would be no reason for them to be mistreated other than jealousy (ooh! he can savagely murder people using nothing but their own thoughts and he gets all the ladies?! we are SO overthrowing their government). Also, since the psi monks were 'evolved' in a deep dark cave, it probably wasn't very easy to see each other and as a result people probably didn't realize how ugly their wives or husbands were... :)
I didn't bother with the legs... I haven't drawn male legs in so long and his legs are long, curvaceous and womanly - not frail and bony. It made him look like a russian ballet dancer and I wasn't too happy with it!
In my brain psi monketry should be a curse just as much as it is a gift. Psi monks should be rather grotesque and sickly looking physically while possibly viewing the world from a slightly less normal perspective as non-psi monks. I dunno, either a more vibrant world, or a darker, drearier world (maybe both, depending on how much psi energy the psi monk has?)
Maybe someone else out there would like to draw their interpretation on how an average psi monk looks?

well, sunny, his chest looks too... *cough*... bosomy. I like the face, it's interesting. Hips definitely not mannish. I suggest making his hips same size as his chest, not shoulders, that should give the proper perspective. Don't definite his pectorals so much, they look like tits, frankly. The shading only worsens the problem - I suggest a larger shiny area to "flatten" the pectorals, if you must define them.
oh, and his forearms are too thick in comparison to his biceps... But get the proportions right, and you're pretty much there in the "skinny, frail guy" sense.

Oh, and progress reports :
- Ain't going back in Neocron - all the Neocron files got corrupted AGAIN, so I'm thinking it's a computer issue, cannot fucking pinpoint what the hell is going on in there
- side comic project - Not good. I lost the sheet detailing what I had planned for the first few, so I can't really wing it that well. I'll keep working on it, but still... grrr!
- summer scribbles - They're okay, but I got to find the damn scanner cds to reinstall them on this computer (if I use this fucktard again) or reattach the scanner to my laptop so I can scan them in.

I didn't put in a background because she's supposed to be leaning on a bar table - I didn't realize until I was halfway done with the thing that all of the bars in NC are waist height and not elbow height... :(

My last doodle was a BD chick completely empowered by drugs, being agressive and dominating. This one is on the opposite side of the spectrum, a BD woman hopelessly addicted to a certain drug and unable to afford many of the necessities for life due to her drug problem. Her clothes are rather simple but I wanted it that way; she's supposed to be too poor to afford fancypants clothing :)

However the point Im saying is that that model was most likly a pre-fab. Number one, I know I should be a little more light hearted about this, but Poser is for the most is exactly what it is called, its a "poser". You move around pre built models of human figuers for the most part, or "import Geometry" that youve created previously, thats why for the most part, you can create models in 3dS Max and put them in poser.
Now I will admit that...

That's a pretty quick doodle I did earlier today! Aside from some of the obvious anatomical oddities (the legs, eyes) I think it's pretty good. The hair looks really matted down, but I was sort of aiming for that. The lower section of the hair had some rather interesting curls that are pretty tough to see with the darkness of the background, but I couldn't really find any other backgroundthat would fit... :)
My next doodle will be of Razzor's char! My rule on doodling requests is basically only to draw them if the person has posted them on the thread first :)
This thread is for everyone to post their vision of a char in NC through their own eyes. There's bound to be something getting lost in char interpretation when it goes from the brain, into words, and back into someone elses head. Besides, I understand things best when I see pictures (it's just how I learn!) :)

For one thing getting textures was interesting, I went down to a lake near my house and took some photos of pond scum and photoshoped them up. That and he was box modeled a lot. Too bad his poly count is so damned high, I need to reduce his polys by a ton to get him "rig-able", btw if anyone wants to know why his stomach looks a little pixil wierdy, well its because I dont know how to unwrap models correctly =P Ill learn that next quarter, woot :D

The model looks like victoria. Hair is nice, the trench is a freebie though. In Poser, anything you make is pretty much "your own", it says so in models you download. As in, you get a license by the creator to use the model you've downloaded for any private purpose... if you paid for it, you get to use it in commercial uses too (but you'd have to read the readme/license, it's different for everything). In fact, 99% of Poser users only do the most obvious thing, they pose stuff. They download other people's models (for a fee or maybe not), combine them and make a picture... that's why it's called Poser, not Maya. Frankly, you cannot model in Poser... you'd have to make models in something like 3dS Max, Maya, Lightwave, Rhino, Cinema4D or any other 3d program.
Btw.. Poser 6??? I had 4... and gave up when 5 came out. If you're interested in Poser stuff, check out www.renderosity.com . Free membership, you can browse their gallery after you sign up... about 100 new pictures every day. Some suck, some use the standard models (posette), some are awesome... but because of its nature, Poser takes very well to still shots with a lot of afterwork in Photoshop. Renderosity also has tons of free poser stuff and a market place where you can buy stuff. Renderosity isn't only a Poser site though, it is a website for cg art in general, but Poser happens to be the biggest part.

not really, porn isn't allowed there... there is a lot of "artistic nudity" though

There's artistic, and there's pornographic.
But then again, if I was in front of a Senate committee, I'd say that Playboy's artistic and all the rest would be smut, just to save it from the censors. There's something to be said for quality, you know!

Hi :)
I finished Razzor's request to draw his char Elleth... I think it came out pretty nice in terms of anatomy and the only thing that really bothers me is her pelvis. I didn't stick solidly by Razzor's suggestions but I it seems to fit his char's description and motif pretty well :)
The one thing I'm particularly fond of in this doodle is the boots. I had way too much fun drawing them :P
Here's a few post-inking WIP shots:

:D Good news guys (or at least I think it is) I got my CD back containing my 2d animation I did for my final back from me teacher. Mind you this is a "principles" class so its very basic. I know someone was asking to see it but Im to tired right now to look who asked what up. Its in Quicktime format right now, but does anyone have some suggestions on how I could post it?
on anouther subject, anyone have some crits for my Female there? Im out of contact of my other art buddies right now (they're all aperently getting Mexican Ale and whor- err Acheem, Excitable women, down in mexico right now). Critiques would be welcomed, as they always help me improve my style. And lastly, I promise Ill have at least one strip (sketched out befor the weeks over) I dont have the proper photoshop skills to do it justice, but Ill try.

Man! That's a quite nice girl, that elleth.
I have to admit, I like these boots too, even though they're not *strictly* functional.
For some reason, the show "The Cut" just popped in my head when I saw this picture. Probably because it reminds me of that episode where Hilfiger had the contestants try to do some sort of "urban chic for the next season" thing.
I reeeeeeeeeeeeeally like her shirt... that "ice crystal" effect or something.. that absolutely rocks. The darker skin completely kicks ass, but the blue eyes is kinda... unexpected. Kind of contrasty to her skin.
Lost my drawing pencil set and I'm just grouchy over it. Probably gonna break down, weep, and just post my drawings as-is. I really don't like my newer drawings as-is, since my normal practice is conceptal sketches then I slowly modify into the final outcome. Takes a long-ass time, for me anyway, but it's like the only way I can work. Something like OCD or something. Heh. Some of the pictures must have like ragged spots where I erased so often.
note- that other thread, the N.ed thread with the crazy epic story, must have hit like 100k views and 50 pages, Clive...

hmm...
well, considering that DoY has such a grunky color palette, the MB is dingy beige and rust, and Neocron is gray/white/black... that's hardly *really* urban camo. Unless you're talking about Tech Haven, whereupon anyone wearing that in a full-suit will frigging DISAPPEAR!

Razzor said that he wanted me to doodle his char with a sleevless blue camo shirt, black pants, cowboy boots, long blue hair, and a long unbuttoned black trench coat :) I had a lot of trouble with the trench coat so I erased it out, and spiced up the boots to make them look more futuristic :P
I drew another stripper while trying to work on my anatomy and proportions and general 'sultry appearance' that I somehow achieved with my first stripper :P
If the last stripper attempt was a circus-freak stripper, this one is a marching band geek stripper (not by intent... I guess it's the thick gold strings that make me feel that way :P)

Fuckin'ally the damn things get scanned in. I can't believe how tricky it was to adjust the scans to be anywhere near the original drawings. Well, not drawings, but more sketches, as I said.
I'm very much unhappy with them. So embarassing, but it's time to simply let them go.
1 - scanner didn't like this one, apparently. I think I have to re-scan this on different settings. Pic on left is a monk in an abbey. Pic on left is a spy in PA looking at his last pill.
2 - a smuggler PSI Monk handing over a datadisc to a nasty GenTank. I seriously thought about coloring this one simply to show off the cybereye in the GenTank.
3 - Pic on left is a hacker spy at a citycom. Note hacktool and stealthtool. I tried to be a bit stylish in this one. I frigging love the citycom here. Pic on right is an crazed Anarchy Breed gal that's been using salvaged armor. Her skirt is a tire hub with chains attached. Yes, these are fishing hooks braided into her hair. Proportions simply suck in this one. I totally messed it all up.
4 - This is a Tangent tough being ambushed. The eyes, I rather like, but wish I did them better. Whole scene seems a bit... off. Probably the face's proportions.
5 - This is a very rough sketch of a hunting scene. A gentank and female rifler spy in here, they've just taken down a Reaper-class creature. Yes, that's a new gun design. I like to think of it as either a large-bore sabot thrower or even better, a REAL shotgun cannon. Mmmmm.

I don't like posting in this thread without a doodle so here's an older thingy I did that I quickly colored in! :)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/quickie.jpg
OK! Now that that's out of the way... :P
Heavyporker - I loved how you didn't just focus on one person at a time but instead thought out the entire scene! That's really cool and takes a great deal of work (judging by how everything meshes together, it's obvious that you thought of the scenes before drawing it on paper)... My favorite 'scene' is the tangent guy being ambushed (#4), it looks like it came straight out of a movie! The monk and spy one (#1) comes in a close second, I really like the spy's expression.
Tidus - I really loved your BD guy, it totally rocked my socks and I am desperately awaiting more from you!! :)
DJ - You can draw the same person over and over again while still keeping everything the way it should be, in terms of facial structure and proportions. It's something that I have extreme difficulty in doing and I'm very jealous of you for being able to do that so effortlessly :P
CMaster - This thread isn't here to show off your technical talent! It's for everyone to show everyone else how they interpret their char and the world around them! You paid a lot of attention to the detail in your first (and hopefully not last) doodle, I can tell exactly which face and hairstyle it is ingame, that's really cool! I definately would love to see more doodles from you!! :)
If it would encourage more people to show how they interpret things in the game I would be more than happy to make another tutorial starting with the blank sheet of paper and ending it with me posting on here!!

asurmen, sure you can. All it takes is practice. Hard to believe, yes, but it's true.
Just start out with the pencil in your hand and some scrap paper. Sketch the chair or table in front of you - this'll get you started on proportions, scale, and the "feel" of just drawing.
Don't worry about texture or shading. Don't worry about getting it perfect. Just do quickies. It's like writing letters or drawing shapes like triangles and circles - you'll get the hang of the simpler things quite quickly. You can just practice on fruit, other pencils, plants, even that squirrel sitting on the ground chewing on a nut. Just practice.
If you get hung up on pencil, just get ink and brush and just do really quick impulse sketching of something in front of you - this is a pretty damn good way to get the "feel" of whatever's in front of you - the table's lines, the woman's curves, the folds of cloth, etc.

OK! Here's my step-by-step walkthrough of how I did a doodle, from paper all the way to posting it here! :)
1) Get an idea
I was running around DOY a day or two ago and I stopped to look at a boobs 'n guns employee!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/idea.jpg
I thought that she's very boring and simple (not to mention completely unprotected) so I decided to draw how I felt she should look! :)
Most of my other doodles pop into my head out of boredom or when I feel like illustrating a certain feeling or event I had! :)
2) Draw it on paper
Think of the different ways that your idea can be expressed :) How will the pose and expression play an effect? will the subject be happy, mopey, arrogant? What will the pose be like? Standing proud, slouched over, dead?
Try to remember all of these things before you start doodling! :)
3) Scan it in
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial1.jpg
Go into File > Import > your scanner's name (mine is WIA-EPSON Perfection 2400)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial2.jpg
Click on "Adjust the quality of this picture" - we need to change its DPI (dots per inch)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial3.jpg
Put in 500 DPI! That's my favorite number to use, it's not too big but still detailed!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial4.jpg
Here's my picture :) It's a mess! But that's not a problem, because when we ink it we'll basically be redrawing it, which is nice!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial5.jpg
At this point I made the image bigger, since it was too tiny for my tastes!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial6.jpg
I made it 500% bigger!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial7.jpg
Now we need to get ready to ink it! :) To do that, we're going to change the dark lines into something less black, by going into Image > Adjustments > Levels!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial8.jpg
Here you can see that by using the settings that I have, the grey pencil strokes have been changed into a light blue color, which is nice :)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial9.jpg
Here it is in bright blue!
4) Ink it
Create a new layer called 'inking'! This is the layer that all of the inking will be done on. This way we can trace the drawn doodle, and make it invisible after we're done.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial10.jpg
To get started with inking, we're going to click on the paintbrush tool and select a nice brush. I prefer the slightly slanted ones (like I have selected in the picture) since the size and shape varies depending on its direction!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial11.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/inking/inking5.jpg
Now we select the pen tool using the setting shown above!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial12.jpg
After drawing the path with the pen tool, right click anywhere on the canvas to bring up this menu! We want to outline the path, so click on 'stroke path'
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial13.jpg
The brush needs to be selected! It'll stroke the path using the brush that we had selected earlier! Also, I prefer to use simulated pressure though others may not. Here's the difference between the two on the same path.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial14.jpg
With simulated pressure
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial15.jpg
Without simulated pressure
Simulated pressure makes the line widest as it approaches the middle portion, and thinnest at the beginning and the end. The variation that simulated pressure provides (in addition to the variation that the brush will give us in different directions) really rocks my socks, so I like to use it.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial16.jpg
I did a little bit more inking while you were reading that last section, sorry. Hope you don't mind!
At this point in time you may want to make a new layer beneath the drawn doodle entitled 'background'. I I like to use a nice grey color (175 RGB) so when we get to doing shadows and highlights, we can see both of them (too light of a background will make the highlights invisible and too dark of a background will make the shadows invisible). If you make the drawn doodle layer invisible, you can see the progress of the inking layer. Here's what mine looks like so far. (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial17.jpg) I forgot to shrink it down before I uploaded it, sorry!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial18.jpg
OK! I'm finally done inking! This is normally the longest part in doodling!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial19.jpg
Here it is on the grey background!
5) Begin shading
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial20.jpg
Now we're going to begin shading! For this, fuzzy blurry brushes like the ones I have selected are the best, but you can use other brushes and get some really interesting effects! It's very important that the opacity of the paintbrush is set to 10% at this time! :)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial21.jpg
Here are all of the layers I have so far! I just added two more for highlights and shadows right now. Some people may like to do both of them on one layer, but I like to spread things out and merge them together when I'm done. (I normally put the shadows and highlights layer underneath the inked layer but I forgot this time... the white from the highlights will show over the black inking and it'll look really weird! Make sure that the inking layer goes on top!)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial22.jpg
I added the shadows now! It looks like of unbalanced but that's only because I haven't done the highlights yet.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial23.jpg
I'm done with the highlighting now. The quick and easy way to do highlighting is simply by whitening all of the areas that aren't shaded in. The shinier you want it to be, the more white you add.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial24.jpg
A trick that I use to show me if I'm done with shading is to make the inked layer invisible. If I can see what is what without the solid black ink lines to show me, then I think I'm finally done with inking :)
6- Begin coloring
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial25.jpg
When I color, I give each color it's own layer. One layer for all of the red, one for the skin, one for the gold, etc etc. As you can see I get careless here - the other layers will cover up the places where the skin shouldn't be showing!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/tutorial/newtutorial/tutorial26.jpg
I just finished coloring here! The highlighting and shadowing seem a little bit harsh on the colors but that's nothing a Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur won't fix!
After putting in a background and applying some other effects the doodle is done!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/finished.jpg
I saved it in photoshop by clicking on 'Save for Web' in the file menu. That'll compress the image's size but leave the quality relatively untouched!
And then I'm all done! This particular doodle took a really long time (4.5ish total hours), but my other doodles normally need around 2!
I hope this tutorial helps everyone and encourages everyone to show their interpretation of NC stuff! :) As you can see, the inking, shadowing and coloring can make the messiest, ugliest doodle look halfway decent!
PS - send me a PM if I was unclear in a certain area and I'll try my best to help you through it, I know I'm not the greatest writer/teacher :P
PPS - NaoK I love that picture and especially the mathematic equations that it's linked too! Are you a photographer? :)

I drew my new char today! :)
Her name is Antimony Jones and she's a (temporarily) Crahn monk who predominatly uses poison! I don't really like the way it came out (there's a lot of anatomy issues) but I do like the outfit :) I tried to make it part gypsy/part prehistoric/part preacher with a touch of sexiness and a little bit of poison!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/antimonyjones.jpg
I was reading the information stuff about the brotherhood of crahn and it doesn't say much about the actual religion. All it says is the main focus, that they're awaiting the return of their former leader, but nothing else. Maybe someone would like to expand upon the religion and flesh it out? Maybe a set of commandments and rules?
PS - a few people sent me PMs asking me to clarify some stuff about my tutorial :) Most of you guys didn't have any more questions so I'm assuming you've got it all figured out... Post your stuff please! :)
PPS - Cerbious I really like your picture, it's totally amazing for the first thing like that you've ever tried (and still really really really good if you're a well-seasoned doodler)

Thanks for the very nice comments :) It really means a lot to me! But this isn't a 'Sunny's Art Thread', it's a thread for everyone to show everyone else how they interpret stuff in NC, so stop commenting and start doodling! :)
I decided that I didn't like monks much, and plus my levelingbuddy outleveled me by like 70 psi, so I decided to remake Antimony Jones into a pure hacknet-hacker! :)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/newantimony.jpg
I don't really like the way I ended up doing the hair, and the pelvic area seems really wacky but I think it came out to be pretty good overall :)
Food for thought! What exactly is hacknet? is it 'suspending' yourself in the genrep process? an internet-like thing? Dicuss! :)
that a really good interpetation of hacknet there sunny. Though when i first glanced it it looked like a greek pot (the red orange and hair style) not a critism though :)
Cool with the HN girl there :D
uh..i believe hacknet is a visual representation of the genrep/internet system of neocron. so what you see as hacknet isnt really there its just made to look that way to be comprehnsible by slightly above normal ability hackers

I tried to draw my private char as an FA, and not a TS like last time, but it didn't come out as good as I thought it would when I first drawing it! I think the hair's a bit overdramatic but it's really the first hairstyle that I've done that was loosely based on the ones that are available ingame :)
I like the idea but I don't really like how I pulled it off. I'll probably end up redoing it sometime in the future.
(PS - the hand was supposed to be gripping the underside of a banister but everything in DoY is so short! It looks so weird!)
I included a few post-inking pictures so you can see it a little bit better :)

Im sorry rosy, ive been busy with school recently, and not much of anything that ive been working on has been much cyber punk. I can submit some other stuff.
Nice thread, alot of talent on these forums :)
I just have a small comment to Sunny. I really like your drawing, I like the style,
but I must comment on the shading. You are trying to "cheat" with shading by
trying to automate the process, it often leaves your chars looking glossy like they
are covered in grease.
I'm not going to say that I can do it better, because I cant, I suck at drawing,
but you should try to do the shading by hand a few times, it might take some
extra work but your drawings will look alot better.
Don't take this as flaming, because I'm not trying to have a go at you.

I love these new ones you put out, Sunny.
Man.. Your "technopunk" fashion couture has such cool stylishness! I love it. I'm having a difficult time trying to come up with a cohesive clothing style for my characters, but at least I've got a couple.
Hopefully, I'll be able to put a couple up of my latest soon. (Drawing only, I haven't had any time for the Gimp cool-ific-ation process)
edit - I think I understand what you're talking about. Specularity (gloss spots) does seem a bit wide and circular. Highlights on clothes generally are less that and more like crescents (following body's curves).

Hi :)
retr0n, thanks for the advice. I never really stopped to think about my shading process too much. But now I'm definately seeing what you are - the shinies don't look just right. So, I'm trying to find a more effective shading technique that will enhance the look of my doodles :)
The first technique that I tried was using the lasso tool instead of the paintbrush tool. I don't think it looks terrible, but I also think it seems too flat and isn't dramatic enough for me. I'll have to experiment a bit more with this technique since it's really the first time I've tried :)
Here's a female DoY guard. I don't think it came out very well considering how much time I spent on it, but I do really like the color set and the hairstyle :)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/DoYguard.jpg
Also - for you other guys - What do you think an NC-feeling-picture would look like? If you're not going to doodle it (which is really the whole point of this thread... :() describing it in detail is pretty much the next best thing :)
I personally don't like the word 'cyberpunk' at all. In addition to bringing back awful, embarrassing memories of the 80s, the definition of cyberpunk from wikipedia.org (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberpunk), though a really interesting article, doesn't seem to match up with NC's themes, at least to me. (what are the NC themes, anyway? war, seperation, corruption?)
And even if NC is undoubtedly cyberpunk, cyberpunk fashion is weird, humiliating, and ugly :) A google search (http://images.google.com/images?q=cyberpunk+fashion&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images) shows the following boring, (http://project.cyberpunk.ru/ckx/cpfashion/shoes2.jpg) frightening, (http://project.cyberpunk.ru/idb/images/logos/fashion3.gif) 80s-quasi-futuristic, (http://www.geocities.com/FashionAvenue/3714/cyber2.gif) terrifying, (http://www.reddawn.net/costume/Cyber/Dawnpunk.jpg) and undescribable (http://www.reddawn.net/costume/Cyber/ImageD.jpg) pictures.
I feel that Neocron's clothing as a whole should be slightly shamanistic and tribal, while mainly looking like the clothing of the 23rd century (due to the ceres disks being exposed to a relatively undeveloped society). Neocron city's clothing should be clean, presentable and uniform-like, whereas the Dome of York's should be whatever anyone wants it to be (although straps should be the common theme in the Dome's fashion scene, just so every outfit can feel slightly related and easily identifyable as a DoY thing)
(PS - if I haven't made it clear in this boring babbley post (I'm an awful writer) I want to know what makes an outfit feel as if it belongs in NC :P)
Clive tombstone
26-10-05, 20:22
Well, wouldnt it be called maybe "neo-Punk" then? since its far off from the eighties for the most part, and its raging in some different fasion. I DO agree with the tribal aspects, because it does exist in some parts of the game world. But thanks to the Ceres Disks, Humanoid knollege was restored to what it was (for the most part) before the big "five minute war"
PS Im gonna post some stuff tonight, I promis, It wont be finished and inked/colored since Im still installing my new Tablet (yes I got one, 35 bucks for a grafire 2 6x8 tablet!! Thank you AI rummage sale!) Some will (and wont be) NC stuff.

Okay, these pictures you showed aren't anywhere near proper cyberpunk (with the exception of the shoulder-mounted camera one), Sunny, despite what Google may think.
The tech of the 80s hardly would come near to what Gibson's writings alone would exemplify.
TODAY'S tech would approach and exceed the standards. Luminous clothing, half-decent prostheses, neural implants, cameras that can fit in shirt buttons and glasses (thus becoming practical for the "consensual hallucination " that cyberspace is defined as, cyberspace being a critical cornerstone of cyberpunk culture). One could go on and on about this.
And please, that 80s' crap, while indicative of a segment of 80s' culture, isn't indicative of any half-assedly decent fashion sense, which would be LOOKING GOOD at the very least (and comfort being an important metric of personal fashion preference). I mean, geez, I'm not a fashionista, but even I put on clothes that don't march down the street in front of me, heralding my incipent embarassment.
edit - oh, and clive - big tits, sexy pose, pouty lips = sexy female ( at least as percieved by like.... 90% of the male audience).

Hi guys, I've been pretty recently :(
I got about halfway through a doodle and had to jet off somewhere, with only a really simple 30 second shading job and no colors at all... as a result it's a little bit tough to differentiate the different parts of the outfit!
I'm not too sure if I like the rolled up sleeves, they're a bit too big. It sort of makes me think of a pirate's outfit, although with the "EXPECT SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT" message on www.neocron.com, who's to say that evolution 2.1 won't bring pirates and ship raids and stuff!? :P
This doodle was supposed to be the DoY-counterpart of this one! (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/moremarmalade.jpg)
If any of you guys might be interested in shading/coloring this picture since I won't be able to get to it for a little while, drop me a PM and I'll email you/upload a larger, unshaded version on a white background so you can have a field day in photoshop!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/DOYgal.jpg
Heavy, I really like that picture of the psi monk! It's very simple, yet says so much! Although I'm sure if you colored in your other doodles, you'd have a picture that looked just as good :) With that being said, heromachine.com is a really easy and quick way to illustrate your characters!
DJ, you have a really great concept of the female anatomy and muscle structure. You always pay such close attention to the details of your char's outfit, and that's really nice! I think the hair looks good; it's a bit short for my tastes but the sort of tomboyish look is pretty awesome!
Clive, good luck on the video game team! Is this the first time you're actually being involved in a project like this?
Hope to see more doodles and such :)

Hi everyone, hope you all had a very happy thanksgiving (if you celebrate it :P)
I finished that other doodle I did a few weeks ago. Something about it gives me this pretty 'disney character' feeling - I think it's the gigantically oversized sleeves. I think the pants and shoes are pretty cool, though :) I can't really decide whether or not I like it!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/DOYgalcolor.jpg
I also did a pretty quickie doodle :) I based the idea off of Lifewaster of Phoenix LTD, an ultra hip and trendy PPU who uses a bunch of pistols! Unfortunately it's not finished, and I had a fair bit of gender confusion (I forgot that lifewaster is a male...:( stupid unisex PA!) It's a bit difficult to differentiate the different parts of the picture since it's all the same color, but I think the overal picture is pretty hard to misinterpret!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/femalelifewaster.jpg
Heavy - I generally shade one side of something and highlight the other. I can't make a quickie tutorial showing the exact steps but I'll get on that ASAP... if you want, you can send me your photoshop/gimp file and I'll be more than happy to show you how it's done (provided you don't mind showing others your unfinished work)
DJ - I really really really like that picture :) My favorite part is that it seems very neocron-ly while still keeping your unique style. I also like the fact that it's very clean, and shows a really weird collection of sullen, de-sensitized fear emotion. I'm really looking forward to your webcomic in 4 years :)

I would really love to see some of your arty ones :)
I drew another pretty quick hacknet gal again. I'm not sure whether or not I like the hair better this way (like normal, non-hacknet hair), or like the last hacknet gal (wavey wacky flowy hair). I like the blue hacknet-scheme! It's very bright and eye-catching! I like the hairstyle, and will probably end up using it again. Drawing a mouth was really difficult for me, so I just left it out :P
I know these types of doodles 'most neocron-y' ones that I've done, but I feel really weird since I'm pretty much copying what's already there; I would much rather prefer to be branching off and enhancing what's there (although there really does have to be a line drawn somewhere :P)

Here's the image of the wintery scene before I aged it. I think it looks much better after it's been aged!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/winteroriginal.jpg
As per Heavy's request, I made a little tutorial underlining how I aged the picture. It's not particularly thought-intensive but it doesn't look great with every picture (as I'll demonstrate today :P)
First, here's the picture that I'm going to age. I got the idea after wondering why there weren't any male dancers! Then I realised that instead of bringing men down to the women's level, the devs should focus on bringing the women up a few notches by creating some female-based enemies. So, here's a Regant's-style mutant thing! I know it doesn't really fit in with the Regants 'mutant worm thing feng shui'ing all of your organs out' shtick, but you know... whatever :)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/regantsfemale.jpg
I don't think it came out too well (it was all very very rough on paper) but I like the idea I have behind it... I'll probably end up re-doodling it again some other time.
OK, now here's how you can make any picture look aged!
1) Merge everything that you want aged onto a single layer
This is important since the filters and other tricks will only effect the active layer!
2) Give the picture some film grain
Go into Filter > Artistic > Film Grain
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial1.jpg
And use the following settings:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial2.jpg
3) Fade the film grain a little bit
Go into Edit > Fade Film Grain (this option will only be selectable if you do this step DIRECTLY after you do the film grain. If it's not selectable, use the history bar to go back to the step directly before you applied the film grain and try again)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial3.jpg
And fade it:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial4.jpg
4) Add some noise
Go into Filter > Noise > Add Noise
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial5.jpg
And use the following settings:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial6.jpg
5) Change your foreground/background color
Their colors are F8E8D2 and 7D5B2C I believe!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial7.jpg
You're doing this to prepare for the next step, rendering clouds to give it a more dynamic look!
6) Render Clouds
Go into Filter > Render > Render Clouds
Your picture will be replaced by a bunch of colors! Don't panic, it's supposed to happen!
After that, fade the clouds by going to Edit > Fade Clouds
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial9.jpg
Using the following settings:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial10.jpg
7) Grain it some more
Go into Filters > Texture > Grain
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial11.jpg
Using the following settings:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial12.jpg
And this is about as aged as the picture will look. In this case, the picture I'm trying to age looks really really awful :P
The pictures that normally look best are pictures that contain a lot of browns, beiges, and tans. This picture is mainly shades of grey and it doesn't look too hot!
8) Increase the Canvas size
Go into Image > Canvas Size
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial13.jpg
Using the following settings:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial14.jpg
We're doing this to prepare for our next steps, creating the edges of the picture so it looks like it's seperate from wherever you're posting it!
9) Select the new canvas area with the Marquee tool
The new area should be blank, like it is in this picture :)
We're doing this to prepare ourselves to select the exact size of the picture.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial15.jpg
Now that we have selected everything that's NOT the picture, we can go into Select > Inverse
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial16.jpg
And that leaves us with a rectangle that has the exact size of the picture, which is nice, because we're going to put the edges on next!
10) Add the edges
Before we can actually add the edges, we should increase the size of our box so it extends just a little bit past the picture. We can do this by expanding our selection!
Go into Select > Modify> Expand
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial16.jpg
And use these settings:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial18.jpg
Now, create a new layer underneath the picture, like this, using a fairly dark brown, beige, or tan color (I picked a really awful color, don't use this one! :P), and use the paint bucket tool to fill in the selection.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial19.jpg
Having just one solid block of color is pretty boring! So we're going to add a little gradient to the edges, it'll look a little bit more dynamic that way.
Change your foreground color to black (the color box that's higher up and in the front... this will be our shadow color)
And when the edge layer is selected, click on the effects button (the circle with an f in it), then click on Gradient Overlay
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial20.jpg
And use these settings (you'll need to change the actual gradient, use one that goes from being transparent into being the foreground color):
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial21.jpg
11) Chop up the edges
We'll want to use the regular lasso tool for this :)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial22.jpg
Zigzag while moving your cursor down, like in this picture. I went a little bit overboard (and it came out even worse because of it) since I was trying to chop out the right side of the picture because I thought it was really ugly :)
A good tip is to alternate between hardcore zigzags, and gentle swooping curves... It'll look more natural that way :) I did nearly all hardcore zigzags for this picture and as a result it looks like someone had a field day with scissors :P
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial23.jpg
Make sure that the lasso is in a fairly large circle shape with a bunch of zigzags on one side, like mine. We want to delete all of the tan edges later, so we should have them inside the circle.
Hold shift, and do the same thing for another side!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial24.jpg
Repeat for the other two sides! :)
When you're done with that, clear everything that's in the selection. It should look something like this:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/agedtutorial25.jpg
Make sure you clear both of the layers, the picture layer, and the edges layer.
12) Put on some final touches
I put my other aged picture in the background but it didn't help at all :P
Shading also helps make the picture look as if it's seperate from the background, which is nice! Make sure that there's enough room for all of your shading, it looks really weird when parts of the shading are cut off.
If you haven't done so already, make sure the background is the same color of the background of the place where you're going to post it!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/aged%20pictures/regantsfinal.jpg
And there you have it! The really cool thing about Photoshop is that by using 'actions' (if you don't have that window open, go into the windows menu and find it) you can have Photoshop do the first 10 steps for you in about 2-3 seconds! So you can age any photograph almost instantly :)
Hope this tutorial helped!
I'm really looking forward to seeing some more doodles :)

Hi :)
Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been pretty busy :(
I read the planfile earlier!
The most important and biggest goal for this Add-on will be a complete revamp of the player models and all human NPC's. We aim to raise their level to the quality of the new weapon models. Important will be to embed the new models in style, detail and texture in the Neocron atmosphere in a better way.
I am very excited about this :) I was totally amazed by how well thought-out and detailed the weapon models are! They're all so high-tech and futuristic, but don't seem too similar to what the technology is like now, and aren't so far-fetched that they look like alien guns. I'm sure that the talented art department will come up with something that everyone can enjoy!
Although... Why should they have all the fun? Why don't we all doodle pictures that are embedded with style, detail and texture that would fit into the Neocron atmosphere better than the current models do? :)
Maybe if we do enough doodles, the devs will take notice and be inspired by one of our designs, and model it! :)
I am personally hoping that there will be more clothing variety, as in, each faction would have a different choice of clothing to choose from, in addition to having many more models for clothing (robes, sleeves, dresses, skirts, etc etc) that can be changed to fit the situation better (I played AO a while ago, and spent all of the money that a generous player had given me on all sorts of clothes! I had a combat outfit, a formal outfit, a party outfit, a dining outfit, and all sorts of other cool stuff. I had a blast!)
And I am also hoping that there are a few new animations put in with the new models. Most notably the animations for casting psi spells... I think there's a little bit of emphasis on the brain and head in the casting animations, but the wiggly hand parts, and the 'hold heal/S/D/buff psi ball above your head' really makes it seem very fantasy-based!
So, with the last two paragraphs in mind, I doodled this! (sorry it's not really finished)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/TS-monk.jpg
I think this one came out pretty well :) She's supposedly a Tsunami Syndicate Psi monk, sporting a sexy, sassy, slightly shamanistic, yet sophisticated outfit (try saying that one ten times fast, alliteration rocks!)
It's probably really tough for you guys to see where one article of clothing begins and the next ends since it's not in color and everything's grey, but I think the overall idea is still clear; accentuating the womanly body parts and camoflaguing the rest, pretty much!
She's casting a heal psi spell, although this version is supposed to be more 'smokey', and less 'bubbley' than the current one. Its casting animation would be much more fluid than the disco-dance that psi monks pull every time they cast a passive spell!
Eventually what I plan to do is make little 5-6 second shorts showing the animations that I have in mind; it's not terribly difficult since it's basically drawing the same thing like 30 times, but it's very time consuming and I won't even attempt it unless I know that a dev would seriously consider using the animation for reference or something, or if other people try to do the same thing :)
This is the 'draw and interpret your char thread', not the 'hey! look at rosalind's, DJ's, and occasionally clive's doodles thread'. There's been over 16,000 views (wow!!) as of now, and pretty much only two people are regularly posting doodles :(
This thread isn't here to show off technical skill, it's for you to show everyone else what you would like your char to look like. :) If you don't feel comfortable showing your doodles to the rest of the forums, you can PM me the picture's link, or email me the file at mawee3@gmail.com, (I would really really love to see your doodles. I'm very good at giving critique without breaking hearts and smashing dreams, if you are interested in becoming a better artist! :)), and if I feel that I am able to, I'll try my best to re-doodle it and share the same idea with everyone else (with your permission of course!! :))
I really really appreciate everyone's comments but I would love it so much more if you guys would at least attempt to doodle something (or at the very least, describe it in detail)
And finally! Asurmen, I don't really like doing doodle request unless you try doodling first :P I know you can do that!
Really really looking forward to seeing everyone else's doodles!

Aw, Sunny, don't I count? :(
That's a pretty nice sketch, but again, I fear that you're feeding into the "Monkz aer teh wizardzs!!! lol!!!111" travesty.
I did a couple sketches a while ago that showed psionic energies whirling around one's head, energy coming out of his eyes. Perhaps also distortion ripples around his head. After all, with a Psi, his brain, his mind is his power. It makes much more sense for energy to emanate out of his head.
Didn't also the Firestarter movie show fireballs coming out of that girl's head? And in Farscape, with the, er... Scarrans, with their semi-telepathy that they use to crush prisoners' will, has a heat-distortion effect coming from their head towards the target.

Nice one rosa chick....rawr!
Really like the look of that psi monk.
what i would do for a female monk (if i could fuckin draw) Is have an over size
black gothic glove (For anyone who has read battle chasers you know what im
on about)with chains coming from it which wrap round the arm upto the
shoulder. prolly something like the collar you had on your drawing also, then a
leather vest cut at the mid drift but at the back moves down to a sorta cape
just below the knees. would also have black baggy jeans (add a make shift chain
belt with lil large padlock for shits and giggles) with armor style boots.
Would also be cool to have more in the way of piercings for both male and
females. Some really cool neck and bridge piercings would really rock.
if that makes no sense shoot meh

I was half expecting this thread to become more popular when KK made the announcement about new player models in the planfile, not nearly instantly fade out of existance :(
You're right, heavyporker! It would make more sense for psi-related stuff to come out of the head, since all that stuff is related to brain strength and toughness! I'll try to illustrate that in my future psi monk drawings (or maybe you could give it a shot too!)
SIL - That's a very descriptive idea you have! It sounds very stylish! I'm having difficulties finding a picture of the glove thing from Battle Chasers, is it safe to assume that it's like Hellboy's stone hand (http://www.svetdvd.cz/images/27/hellboy.jpg), only more like a psi glove? You should definately try to draw it, I'm sure it would look really awesome no matter how badly you think you doodle!
I drew an outfit for a spy in black dragon! I tried to make it have a sort of chinese aura about it - BD doesn't seem to be like the faction to hang on to 800+ year old traditions, I know, but I thought that having a futuristic, sexier version of a qi pao/cheongsam would be kind of cool! It uh, probably would hinder movement since it's very flowing and constricting but it would make a cool tradeskilling or formal outfit!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/blackdragonformal.jpg
I had a lot of difficulty with the face, and I think that I could have done a lot better with the embroidery on the bottom, but I still think it's pretty cool. Sorry it's not finished, but if noone else will even think about putting an hour into a drawing, why should I?
The lack of color in this doodle will probably cause some confusion, especially since there's a lot of stuff happening in the outfit, but I think the message still gets across.
I think having a very large, diverse, and easily customizable selection of clothing and outfits will make the world of NC seem that much more immersive, and having seen what KK's art department is capable of through the guns that they made, really fills me with a sense of hope, since they're very graphically talented and are capable of creating objects that really seem to 'fit in' with the setting. But like I said in my previous post - why should we let them have all of the fun? We should show them what we think we should be wearing in the game - seeing as we're the customers and players and all that :)
When I played anarchy online for about 3 days, I spent all of the moneys that I was given (because I'm a woman and everyone likes to give women free stuff) on like a million different articles of clothing. I made a combat outfit, a fancy elegant outfit, a team uniform, an excercise outfit, a lounging around outfit (and probably a lot more, this was a really long time ago) and had a lot of fun doing that. It's a shame I was nearly instantly bored by the game, not to mention that the graphics weren't so great on my computer, and the setting was too 'out there' for me.
Really looking forward to seeing some doodles (please don't let this thread die! :))

yep, sunny, I've already done a few pencil drawings of what I'm trying to convey.
I do get what SiL's getting at, but in Neocron's mileu, full hardware hookups aren't always necessary, you know? Psi augmentation could be done using the body's neural network and circulatory system (in case chemical... inducements... are required for the enhancements). Hence the suprisingly elegant psi gloves that we see now.
But I'd frigging love to see what I think would be "obsolete": psi gloves and equipment that needs full hardware hookups, like SiL's idea.

What a cool little doodle Aisynia! I really like the minimalistic approach to the shading that you did! It's so subtle but really adds depth to the face. I'm also a fan of the expression; it's not a simple 'boo-hoo, look at me, I'm sad!' face, it's a 'I have some bad news for you...' face, which is so much deeper and more expressive, not to mention harder to capture! I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your doodles, you obviously put a lot of time and effort into them!
I was inspired to try to create a sorrowful, expressive emotion like Aisynia did but it didn't come out quite as stirring as his :P It's boring and generic and didn't really turn out to be what I was aiming for (this is more of just a ':(!!!!' face as opposed to the 'I'm sorry!' I aimed for)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/sad.jpg
I like the hair though, it was inspired by the early 90s when the hip trendy thing to do was to fluff your hair up as much as humanly possible (good times!)!
DJ - I think you have a very unique style that's capable of expressing several thoughts and ideas, I would really hate to see you change it! I know it's really hard to give and take advice through text, but I think it would really help your feelings of restrictiveness if you tried to focus on motion first, and shapes secondly. Try to keep your hand moving in one direction (for example, start off with only drawing lines going up and right, then after you're finished with all of the up-and-right lines, finish the doodle by drawing all of the down-and-left lines) it's really hard to understand, but I think that drawing things through that method would really help your feelings of restriction by giving things a more 'voluptuous' appearance. if this confuses the bejeezus out of you please send me a PM :P
Really looking forward to seeing more doodles!
Thanks for the compliments Sunny, it's appreciated :)
Though I would never call something I have to literally spend 3 days on a doodle, I understand what you mean :p I spent about 5 hours on the original drawing, then a couple of days working on coloring and shading after it was scanned in. Looking through this thread, I actually use some similar processes that you do, though I avoid freehand with a mouse as much as possible.
I won't say I don't have any talent at all, but I have very little, so I compensate with patience :p Most of my artistic talent lies with writing drama (as in stories with a lot of deep character emotion and interaction). I recently started drawing because where I publish one of my fan fics.. there is a space next to each entry for a picture, and I really didn't like staring at a big "NO SCREENSHOT" image.
I'm getting better, but I don't expect I'll be as awesome as you are any time soon. Truth be told, I just don't spend enough time drawing as opposed to writing. My two current drawing projects are a comic for Neocron (a funny one.. hopefully.. I'm not a very funny person.. well not intentionally) and another for my fan fic I mentioned. That picture has been sitting stagnant about a month because... it's missing something. I have some ideas, but meh.. can't come up with the energy to look at it lately..
Also, I agree.. subtle emotion on a face is hard to capture. I spent about 3 hours erasing and redrawing the eyes. I almost wore through my paper.. and I have really nice professional type erasers lol. Most renditions made her look like "holy shit, I'm gonna die in about two seconds.. and I just witnessed the deaths of everything I ever held dear!"
My main problem is with depth, I have a HARD time with depth. I'm very happy to hear you think that drawing has depth, because most of my works I feel lack a sense of it.
As for shading, I have experimented with several kinds, but I like this the most. It's actually a borrowed shading style, from the way most Final Fantasy and some anima characters are drawn in stills. The shading is very subtle, barely there, but it gives that sense of depth and I'm glad I was able to pull it off, because it was very, very difficult.
Finally, I find it interesting, your interpretation of her emotion. Every person I've shown it to has had a different opinion, but yours (your opinion on her mood) is definitely the closest, it's almost spot on. I'm gonna write a fic involving that character, but I need to straighten some facts out before I do so.
Sunny, you really shouldn't downplay yourself by insulting your own work ("It's boring and generic") and consequently, yourself, it's not becoming of you :) It's not boring, it's not generic, but ya it does look like she just watched her puppy get hit by a car :p If that wasn't what you were aiming for then.. well that's what an eraser is for hehe ;) I think all of your drawings are superb and are truly artistic. I like the line style you use. While I wouldn't use it personally, just because it's not how I draw (and I would feel like a ripoff), I love it, it's splendid. I'm not honestly sure I could pull it off anyways. My first few drawings were freehand mouse, and I got sick of "draw, ctrl+alt+z, draw, ctrl+alt+z, draw, ctrl+alt+z, draw, ctrl+alt+z...". So if you can actually do that without much undoing, then.. well, you've got talent pouring out of your ears :p
Much love, if you wanna take a look at my other stuff and maybe gimme some pointers and opinions, PM me. I've also always got an ear (and an eye) open if you wanna do the same.

What I meant by a restrictive style is that, if you notice, all my pictures are in the 3/4 view. If I ever try to draw front on or anyother angle it falls apart.
I know how you feel in that regard. All of my drawings except for one (which I drew with a point of reference instead of from my mind) are head on. There is something in my brain that somehow cannot properly interpret alternate angles by itself.
This is that pic. Her skin being blue is a long tale, dictated by the story of the game for which I wrote the fan fic to which that pic belongs (mouth full).

I drew a generic female using a new set of brush properties. I like how 'full' it looks, but it seems to be a bit 'thick'... I think it might be a result of carelessness and also because of the doodle (I used a pretty thick ink pen for this instead of a pencil). The new brush setting smade it a lot quicker of a process than the last doodles I've done. I'll definately use the same brush properties in the next doodle I do to see how it looks!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/generic.jpg
Those are pretty cool sketches Clive! They sort of look very 'steampunky' to me, but also incorporates some science-fictiony futuristic things in there, which creates a really unique and creative look! I can't wait to see them modeled :)
Thanks for the kind words Aisynia :) You sure do put a lot of time and effort into your doodles! I like your portrat of the woman a lot. The sharp lines of the eyes really create a dramatic feel, which adds to the teardrop instead of stealing attention from it... great job! The Path doodle is cool (I love the shading again, it's barely noticable but adds so much depth); I'm not really too sure what the heck that bug thing is, but I know the person in the armor is protecting the person on the floor, who is writhing in pain! I would to love to know the stories behind your doodles :)
DJ, I really haven't noticed that all of your doodles have been done in the 3/4s view :) Does it really matter that much, though? You can make any scene work in that style; whereas someone who was only good in doing front and side views would experience a great deal of frustration due to a severe lack of depth! If you're looking to try things in front view I bet using some google images (http://images.google.com/images?q=model+poses&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images) (I really hope that link doesn't eventually lead to any inappropriate content) as a reference would help! Their poses might be a bit too sexy and sassy for your gritty, down-to-earth drawing style, but the positionings of the various body parts might help you visualize your doodles from the front and side perspective.
Looking forward to seeing some more doodles! :)

I was experimenting around some more with the new brush settings. I definately think I enjoy it much more than the previous set; the lines are a bit less varying in size, but the new 'fullness' really makes everything seem so much more complete. It's also a lot easier to do.
I did this picture a few days ago! It's a psi monk wearing a porcelain mask. The inspiration for this picture was Calendar (http://www.batman-superman.com/batman/img/grabs/Cgirl.jpg) Girl (http://www.batman-superman.com/batman/img/grabs/Cgirl2.jpg) a supervillainess from Batman's animated series that was really popular on TV about 10 years ago.

My idea was to have her appear to be pretty masochistic by having a lot of heavy, restricting clothing while at the same time being near-offensively tainted... but it didn't turn out too well. I don't really like the torso wrap, the arm bands, the weird white swirlies or the fancy neckline - it's a bit too ornate and pretty, and as a result it seems more fantasy-based than futuristic. I'm a big fan of the lower half though. I think it portrays just enough sleaze, straps, and vulgarity to fit in to a futuristic and post-apocalyptic world.
I also did a really really quickie picture that I was inspired to do after reading about the faction objectives. I wonder what BD has planned! I bet it'll be an 'offer that you can't refuse'!

Given the amount of time (no more than 20 minutes) I spent working on that doodle, I think it came out really nicely! I'll definately end up finishing it soon.
Mighty Max, what a cute little drawing :) He makes me think of those old guys who were in the muppet show, grr, I can't remember their names! I would definately love to see a little bit more depth put into that picture, like... what is the man doing? where is he doing it? why? ETC ETC ETC :)
CMaster, those are some pretty interesting ideas you have! The pictures say so much, and I bet it really helps communicate things that you visualize to the other people who participate with you! I would definately love to know more about the project :)
DJ, I really love the much more 'supermodelly' approach you took in your doodle. The pose and the expression are so much more seductive than your previous pieces! I really hope you apply whatever knowledge you've acquired while doing that picture into your future doodles! :)
Glad to see that the thread got a burst of life all of the sudden :P Let's hope it doesn't die down!

PS-nice work DJ, youve improved a bit! and yeah, the head sucks I wont lie, but thats mostly because I a little baised to Anime faces. But heck, I still think its a nice picture.
Rosey, nice work once again! I like the Half-masked Monk quite a bit, very neat! and the second has a very peculiar (is that how its spelt?) expression on her face! very neat.
Now for the background pictures I saw....

Just keep trying, and do this, And I dont mean this in any form of offence, Go out and do some study on perspective. I post ona my works soon demonstrating that.

nice DJ, she looks a little "flat" dimentionally, but its still a neat pose. Keep it up!
Nice tank man. No offence though, is that drawn by reference? its still great for a MS paint drawing, since my actual mouse drawing skills suck (I have "slight" tremors in my hands).
Ill post somethin new in a short while, Just need to finish my Anthropology homework.

The torsp is kinda angled towards the camera, while the rest is perpendicular, so the top half has to look all squished, which is really hard to get right.

I do, sadly I dont use it much, guess Ive never gotten into it as much. I cant "try" and get back into it.
Anywho, If anyone wants my aim (Ill be suprised if anyone does :D ) just PM me.
*coughs a few times and continues to finish his anthropology homework*

Hi :)
Sorry for the lack of posting. I've been having some computer troubles, as well as having a bunch of RL things to keep me occupato!
I have some quickie doodles of what I envision people from Via Rosso looking like - exsquisitely elegant, incredibly refined, and radiates political power; sort of like the aristocratic families of southern Italy in the early 1500s, only with a more updated palette of fabrics and ideas. Since the people who live in Via Rosso are too busy being infatuated with their own money, and have others do the manual labor for them, their outfits have very little combat functionality.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/mawee03/gypsy.jpg
Here's a female psi monk. I aimed for a slightly gypsy-like appearance; very refined yet also very eccentric. It's hardly finished but it's definately one that I will revisit in the future.

I'm trying my hand at drawing the male figure again after a break from them for god knows how long! I'll be the first to admit that its a very male-fashion-model physique, partly due to the fact that it's in my background and also because it sort of fits in with Viarosso's 'beautiful is better' schtick and the lean and frail physique of spies. If you couldn't tell, I was thinking of Lucius Malfoy (A character in the Harry Potter movie series) while doing the hair. There was at one point an odd-looking hand at the end of the sleeve but I decided to take it out.
I would love to comment on the bunches of doodles that have been posted since I was last here, but I've got to jet! I'm not able to say anything that anyone else hasn't, and if I was, you guys would probably already know what it was, so you're not missing much :P
Looking forward to seeing some more doodles! glad to see that a little bit more life was breathed into this thread as of recent!

Holy crap Rosey! you draw Be-shonen Dudes  . Hahah, not that Im bustin ohn yeh, I just know quite a few chicks at the institute that draw those. Good to see yer work though, I like how the clothing flows about your characters. I wish I could do that well, my armor tends to be my mainstay for my characters.
I got a challenge for you though, mainly because Im curious how this will turn out. Draw a gritty kinda ugly guy, and Ill try and draw a fancy fashion oriented man. Do you accept my challenge?
Sunny Rosalind
07-02-06, 21:24
What an interesting idea Clive! I accept your challenge! :)
I really don't aim for the whole bishonen appearance :P The long hair on my previous male was more of a homage to the 17th and 18th century style of american mens' clothing and hairstyle. I guess I'll have to be more careful of keeping things just elegant - and not too beautiful with my mandoodles!
Here's my gritty, dirty, ugly man. I think it came out pretty good! I like the way the hairstyle came out, much better than it looked on paper! It kind of makes me think of the lead singer from Gorillaz!

Fresh scan, no cleaning up at all (cba :P)
Im sure her top creeps further up and her pants down in every picture :p

OK, first pic is a slightly different pose, the cloak was an after thought and when I took the boddy away in PS it looked shit, her arse in the second one look daft anyway.
Now, there are some filthy people out there who think I can draw.
So here's what you want, hope you are satisfied.

She looks like a female bodybuilder :/
She looks like a female bodybuilder :/
Devoted Merc in regualr combat? A muscualr physique seems to fit the character quite well. Bodybuilder seems innaporpriate - she isn't bulky, just defined.
Her physique probably does suit her quite well, but very muscular women creep me out a lot.

In reality DJ would be more like a Tri-athlete, which is kinda how I attempt to draw her, clearly more boobage and general curviness though :p.
And yes people really did ask for this. Dirty bitches.
