Last night my 19 inch ViewSonic Pro Series smoked and stank up the house.
I guess it didn't like the new comp I just put together and killed itself. O_o

I don't like LCD monitors much, but have seen a couple that did look passable for my use.

I see some advertised as "fast 8ms refresh rate" is that good enough for gaming?

couldnt say yes or no.....but i havent seen a refresh lower than 8ms

for picture quality/speed crt will rule for some time.
there are some very nice lcd's out there, and you wouldnt notice the 'ghosting' latency too much.

if its from a store (or in one) go and have a look at a fast scrolling movie/game/demo.

Yeah, off to the store in a bit, probably go with another CRT.

15 ms is good enough for gaming, so 8 ms most definitely is too.

Also remember most LCD are DVI not D-Sub (cept the cheaper ones). DVI means the digital signal is going from your vid card to the LCD directly, instead of being converted to analogue to go to your CRT. If you get a D-Sub LCD though, it gets converted to analogue, on your video card, to digital on your LCD, so 3 converts.

I been using an LCD for 3 or so months now, no problem with it at all, cept for a weird ghosting effect on the background sometimes when I open IE/Mediaplayer etc..
