9600XT isnt very good.... (you won't get good preformance with this card, better go for a 6600GT which costs less then $200)
Mobo should have SLi.... (you can always add a 2nd gfx card later)
1024MB memory... (they aint that expensive anymore these days)

Uhm, I'm running the EXACT same gfx card that he stated he'd bought, and I'm having no performance-issues whatsoever... Has run every game I've thrown at it quite smoothly, at relatively high settings... As did my 9100 which, btw, was the best piece of hardware I've owned so far. Never failed to run a game, up until the new shaders that it didn't support... Yeah, the 9600 was cheaper than the 6600 at the time I bought it, which hardly holds true anymore, but still... I'd go for ATI over N-fucking-vidia any day of the week :p

ATI > All

(I'd rather comment on the stupidity of say, 90% of the people buying hard-drives... they buy 160-200 gig drives, that have longer seek-times and are more likely to fail than a 40-60 gig single-disk-drive, when used as the boot-drive... Never, ever, have all your shit stored on the same drive that you have your os/other apps installed on, unless you have it all backed up  )

yeha i have a 40 gig harddrive from my old comp and im planning to use that to back up all my crap and hide my prono from my bro ( joking ) so yeah in total ill have a 200 gig hard drive but the 40 gi will only be a backup drive

double or triple the amount of ram, and change the gfx card..
to 9800, GF6600 or the one i prefer - GF6800U :P
Otherwise.. looks nice.. specially the extra harddrive for porn ^_^

do ati's even support SLI?

:edit: i know that mobo doesnt have it anyway...

Uhm. SLi = Useless for 99,9% of all the worlds gamers... One radeon x850 xt beats a dual 6800GT, so why bother paying 2-3 times as much for them?

I honestly can't understand why Nvidia would continue developing something that 3dfx already deemed a total, utter waste of money... :wtf:

i've heard opinions and seen "facts" that point to either as the best.

in the end its just preferance.

ATI fanbois swear by them... Nvidia fanbois swear by them

Running two identical graphics cards does enhance performance, no doubt about that... The performance boost is not quite 200% though, and the requirements of today's games and the performance of the highest performing cards, to be used in non-SLi-setups, are pretty much on the same level... You'll hardly notice a difference between 60 and 80 fps, or 100 and 120 + many people have monitors that don't go over 100Hz... (which means 100fps)... You'll hardly notice any difference using more than 2-4x FSAA either, which any single high-end gfx-card can already do... both of these apply especially to people with LCD-monitors.

It's not as if SLi is the most affordable option either...

meh... my SLI mobo (in the post soon...) only set me back £80?

I'd rather spend more on a mobo anyway as its a fairly important componant... and seats all the other expensive stuff :p

SLI motherboards don't exactly burn a huge hole in your pocket - there are plenty of non-SLI motherboards that cost more.

I suggest you go for the 6600GT over the 9600XT, it will outperform it and with SLI you could always buy another 6600GT later for extra performance, rather than shell out £300 plus for a top of the line card.

One radeon x850 xt beats a dual 6800GT, so why bother paying 2-3 times as much for them?

Some benchmark results that prove this please; I fail to see how a single X850XT could beat two very high end cards with similar specifications.

Ok, I got a bit carried away there... seems there are alot of different benchmark-results floating around, some less accurate than others...

A dual 6800GT/Ultra beats one single x850XT or any other card, but the difference isn't really noticable until you run your games at REALLY extreme settings. Even then, the performance gained varies between 15 and 30% approximately, and that really isn't good enough for most of us to want to pay up for one extra graphics-card...

Eh? Do you actually have any idea at all about what SLi is? I assume that you do know what it is, so... how about telling me where you were going to get an extra graphics card from (same model as you currently have) for £80?

//edit - http://www.tbreak.com/reviews/article.php?id=360 <--- Yes, it's a benchmark, but it's not very... detailed, so I dunno :rolleyes:
Another one, that's in a bit more... user-friendly format :p http://www.hardavenue.com/reviews/asus6600gtsli1.shtml

you want to get a mobo and gfx for £80?

simply put why not get SLI? well... if your an ATI fanboi i guess it makes sense as ATI cards dont have the SLI capability :p

if you are gettin a GF 6800... get an SLI board. when the next few GF's comeout, get another 6800 (cheaper now) and run them in SLI.

and as for benchmarks / tests: various people could show you one leaning for AMD, or one for intel. one for GF, one for ATI.

:edit: @ above

£30 is alot?

i blew £250 on sunday on my PC.

:edit2: $30 is like £20... more than 10 times less than i spent in 1 purchase
