ok... my computer is pissing me off more and more recently...

so for the last week or so it has been locking up (i noticed it while playing Shattered Galaxy (www.sgalaxy.com) since i havent played NC much in the last week). annoying as hell? yup. but i figured it was a problem with the game. so when i finally get around to launching NC, same thing happens. total lock up.

so here i am getting more and more annoyed. thinking back to what i have changed on my PC recently i uninstall my microsoft keyboard software (no i didnt spend money on a microsoft product... never have, never will... unless i have no choice) in the vain hope that it was conflicting with something.

i give it a quick reboot, all seems good. i figure it wont hurt to do a little spyware checking. hadn't done that in months. i load ad-aware first... notice i have been running a 2002 build for god knows how long, but i run it anyway.it searches for about 3 mins and locks up. piece of shit.

so i close it (<3 taskmanager) and run spybot instead. update it, scan, no probs.

so now i dl the newest ad-aware and run that. in 5 mins it has found 75 problems... but then it stops. its not locked up cause the buttons react when i move the cursor over them.

then i notice in the corner of my screen (the bit next to the cloxk on the start bar... never learnt its name :p) has an explamation mark in a yellow triangle... no tool tip for it, right clicking and left clicking just get rid of it for 2 seconds.

well since ad-aware is not progressing i abort it... BSOD... yay.

ive been getting BSOD's and locking up more and more. im sick of it :p

the only other thing added to my PC is software of... dubious quality. ill find a decent anti virus later (all i have is the evil norton :wtf: )

any advise would be loved, sexed, and maybe even followed up on.

Man that machine sounds ill. Seems like time to backup your data then do the big reformat.
When Windows goes broken it don't fix easily. Less pain in the long run to restart with a clean install.

I really dont back up anytin when I do reformats cause I partition the HDD into tiny bits that way when I GHOST my windows back to C: I dont loose anytin (GHOST OWNZ).

Avast is the first I heard of. Never used it so I cant comment on it. Personally I use NOD32, now this shit really ownz for antiviris, its simple, not a complicated user interface with all the funky features that we hardly use and most appealing of all its the lowest memory hogging viris program I've come across with updates on a very regular base. I say check this shit out, its not free but hey have a look at the trial.

All in all Ghost, Nod32, still to come across a firewall thats great and not a memory hogger, Adaware if your just not careful with the net. I hardly use adaware cause I'm pretty cautious on what I install and browse.

aha i havent used ghost in years :p

well i think ill hold off on the reformatting as im hoping to have replaced 90% of my PC within a month (including HDD) so ill just use this HDD as a secondary HDD while i copy what i wanna keep.

saves on the hassle :p

ill check out avast though, cheers.

oh and i left the PC on overnight (not doin anything more than ad-awaring though) and it didnt crash... i wonder if it was the intelikeyboard thingy software...

Download "hitman pro 2.0"
It's a free tool that combines a shitload of spyware and adware removal tools, plus the ones that aren't listed in any of them it removes with it's own software.
It's made by a dutch guy and i've had tremendous succes with this tool to remove even the nasties stuff (that had random exe names and would reinstall at each bootup and internet connection).

that little exclamation mark in a yellow triangle is the security centre in XP SP2 telling you either you have updates to install, no AV or no Firewall active.

Try MS's own anti-spyware programme too, its pretty nice.

So far there's only a dutch version.

But it's easy realy, all the installation steps of the components are in english, it's just the progress thing that's in dutch.
The website report might be in dutch too, but the softwares used and the spyware names are all in english.

just downloaded it because i want to get rid of nasty ad-aware :p .

aside from the strange language everywhere ;) - it was some nice download speed .

we'll see it install and then.....get confused lol

EDIT: OMGOMGOMGOMGOGMG

that was just the most bizarre 10 mins of my life.
i downloaded hitman pro2.0.9 and installed. its all foreign but still obvious what button to press.
then there was a load of check boxes and more strange writings...again just yes and next till it stops.
it takes over my computer 8| .
reinstalls adaware. installs spy sweeper and blocker. installs spybot over my spybot and another ad type of proggy. it sets all the options itself then deep scans with each program.

removes the re-occuring reg entries and cookies.
all the while sbybot is screaming at me about reg changes.

it has a very nice html page as a summary. even if it is all foreign :)

http://free.grisoft.com

Get this it has a fully working free version with freqent updates, It has removed many a virus for me. Norton ugh I'm sure that company has something to do with microsoft, anyway don't use IE to browse the web unless a website needs it to display properly. Use Mozilla firefox it stops spyware and popups better than IE does and much faster crisp and clean no bullshit just perfect :)

Tips for for firefox users

Type 'about:config' in the address bar and change these settings to these to make your mozilla browser go into overkill mode :p

nglayout.initialpaint.delay '0'
network.http.pipelining 'true'
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests '200'
network.http.proxy.pipelining 'true'

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests can be set too 100 if anyproblems occur, I think all this setting does is it acts like a download manager does. It causes multi streams on webpages content so it downloads faster much faster I might add :)

I use AVG and I have no probs.

Lol, when I have problems like this, I usually go ahead and reformat. I can reformat and get everything I want back up and running within the hour. Here is what I usually do.

Format 15-30 sec
win install 15min
soft install + updates 30-45 min

The beauty of the Caviar and or Raptor Drive. :D

aha i would but i dont wanna go through the hassle of burnin shit to CD's to backup as i only have 1 40Gb HDD installed (from the dark ages...)

infact i could prolly order a new HDD right now... but i promised myself my next purchase would be my mobo. if i had paid in my cheques i could afford both... but i havent :p
