Ive got $2000.00 to spend on a new computer system, and I really know fuckall about computers, so can anyone give me some pointers on what I should get?

heres what I priced out so far

ABIT "AV8" mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
2Gb DDR400 ram
WD Raptor 74Gb 10k RPM hard drive x 2
M-Audio audiophile 24/96 soundcard
19" CRT flat screen monitor

what I dont really know about are video cards, and what I should be looking for in a video card, neocron is the only game I play, in fact, im really building this machine for music production, hence the fast HDs and professional sound card.....with current items Ive listed above Im sittin at about $1500, so that leaves around 350-400 for a kick ass vid card.....any tips?

go to your local store, say you have 500$ for a GFX, see the light in the shopkepers eye, and go home with a new.

i have 20 frames in DoYCC when there is some action on a GF6600GT (239 €l)
but since i have only a A64-3000 and you have 3.4 you will have some more since NC require CPU power.

in the german forum whe thought about lettin NC2 run from a ram disk to get rid of loading models... how about gettin 3-4gig and try that ? :D

My advice would be to check Toms Hardware, they usually compare all the video cards together, so you'll be able to see which one best suits your needs, rather than the "ati > nvidia" or "nvidia > ati" that this thread will generate :p (btw nvidia > ati hehehe)

well i plan too, in the next few paydays, i read that the mobo is upgradeable to 4Gb of ram, and i plan to max that shit as soon as i can afford too...

coincidentally, outside of the gameworld, my music programs, cubase, reason etc etc are highly ram and processor intensive so yea inevitable i will be doing that =)

btw whats toms hardware?

20 fps on a 6600 GT + A64 3000 is baddddddd. What the hell is a matter with your system??

How much RAM?

ok, I went to a store here in town, I looked at a few video cards

does ram on the video card make a big deal?

would it be more beneficial to go with 256Mb as opposed to 128Mb?

for instance, i saw a radeon 9600XT 128Mb of ram....is this an "ok" video card?

it was only 150$ us.....it looked nice, and i can afford better i supposed, but if I can get away with something like this I could maybe buy another gig stick of ram =D!!!!!!

I'm running a 2500 Barton at 3200 with a gig of 3200 ram and a 9800 Pro with 128 vid mem.

That's running the game at 1024x768x32, 4x FSAA, 8x anisotropic filtering and all the in game settings maxed except for veg.

I never go under 45 fps no matter what's on the screen.
And 65 to 100 (capped) in most cases as I run with vsync on

The only time it goes below that is when the hard drive is swapping because of the mem leak in the game.

I'm running a 2500 Barton at 3200 ...

processor power is essential in NC, plus i dont PvP so i put res up to 1280x1024.... did not check the AA features because it makes text pretty blurry in NC at that res.

But you're running a better CPU than I am.

Look over your settings, something needs to be tweaked.

You're assuming NC is like normal games.

Silly boy.
