Guys, a quick question. If you had the choice bettween:

A: your dream job, but you have to travel realy far every day and get payed less.

B: not so dreamy job with the worlds 3rd largest pharmacuticle company, but better pay and no travel.

What would you decide?

Really difficult question really, but I'll answer in perspective.

A few years ago I worked in Bristol with Securicor Guarding (the worlds 3rd largest security firm :p), the shift pattern was 6am-6pm, 6pm-6am, so 4 days am-pm 3 pm-am 4 off 3 am-pm 4 pm-am 3 off, so a 4/3/4/3/4/3 pattern, 12 hours per day, including weekends, bank holidays, xmas, new year etc.. where we got double time, so the money was darn good :D

Thing is though, whilst I guess I enjoyed the job (sat at my desk playing on my laptop with bits of work inbetween), there was no challenge, all I had to do was remember peoples names, where they were coming from, where they were going too, and that is really simple, they come in their lorries or vans, you look at the registration and think "ohh ya" look at driver "ahh, white 72b nan garot" where white = name, 72b = their run number and nan garot a place in wales. Cept weekends when site was closed and I just chilled out or watched DVD's on laptop

But after a few months I wasnt happy in the job, so I had to make a choice, which is more important to me, my happiness or money. I took my happiness, chucked in the job and came back to Cornwall.

So the answer is, I'd take the dream job, BUT, with all that travel you would be away from your family a lot which would drain your social life too, so you might end up unhappy in that job anyhow, so it would be worth thinking "will this job actually make me happy?"

Less than a week to decide  , both are jobs in computing (my only real skill) neither of them will probably offer me any time to get some hours in on NC.

A was; Digital animation studio (big name in the industry), REALY cool working enviroment (but incredibly hard to explain why), endless future prospects but long train travel every day(could be worse).

B was; Pharmacuticle company (Huge industry name), very large and business like working enviroment, not much in the way of carrer progression but good pay and set to get better, very close to were i live.

I cant think straight, iv been on the forums to try and take my mind off it, but its such a hard desicion. Lexx - im not sure which would end up being the happy one in the long run.

Edit: money isent acctualy that much of a big deal for me

Prolly go for A now I know it, but thats just me and what I'm good at anyway. Possibility of rental closer to job a? Some kind of support from work if rental was a possibility?

i could handle a long train ride each day to work at the place i really wanted to work in, also if there's endless prospects/progression up the food chain as they say the pay will probably end up much better than the pharmaceutical company.

Working is working whatever u put it as but if you enjoy the job then surely its better than sitting in a job clock watchin to go home because u hate it and u prolly won't last long there anyway.

Personally I'm sick of commuting and would definitely accept some compromises to get away from it.

Unfortunatley where I live there seem to be no IT jobs of any kind that are even relatively commute-free. No commute and more money would be a clear winner for me (mostly for the commute but the money is nice too).

Then again I wouldn't go back to my previous job for any money even it were right on my doorstep...

My current job is about average for commute, money and enjoyment so right now I'm utterly ambivalent to the whole thing which is odd as normally at least one aspect is better or worse than average.

erm... oh yeah... you wanted an answer.....

I'd say it depends on your age and experience. If it's a first/second job then I'd do what you enjoy while you can. Eventually you may not be able to even consider those options. If you have mortgages and stuff to worry about I'd take the money option and ease the pain by buying yourself nice things.

Imagine when you are old and gray and going to die soon, and now all the memories from your life come back. Which Memories would make you die "happily"? A or B? I would most likely tend to A myself, but the colleages and team atmosphere are important factors as well. You can't be happy in a job were you like your tasks but you don't feel like being part of the company.

If you really have two offers, then take the chance and find out more about both, if you are allowed to, visit them, feel the atmosphere and speak to other people in the company during a break.

From my own experience: dream jobs are not always that good when you look at them closely. Idiot cow-orkers, bosses and lousy work environment can make any job a hell. What makes work good is primarily who you work with and how fun you have with those people, what you learn, how much life you have after work, not what you do. When you've worked a few years, you'll learn that the dream job is to sit in an office and not have any deadlines, but still have some goal to work towards, coworkers that will join you for tea/coffee sometimes, a good couch to sleep off the hangover when you need it, a dead boss and perfect job security.

Long commuting time really kills the will to live. When I commuted 15 hours a week I liked it at first because it gave me time to read the newspaper, books and wake up in the mornings. A year later it began to get boring and yet another year later I started hating it so much I had problems leaving home in the morning and then didn't want to leave work in the evenings. It eventually ended with me spending an insane fortune on taking the cab when going home almost every second day.

The only important thing with pay (at least for me) is to reach a level where there is no need to choose where or when to go shopping. I know I'm making enough money when I can either go to the discount supermarket to buy cheap ingredients for soup or go to a fancy restaurant and not notice the difference in the wallet.

Better pay every time.

Job satisfaction, does not feed you.

Our beloved Alexis is absolutely right.

Get yourself a mortgage, and your dream job becomes a nightmare if money's not enough...
