1st tip, watch out for trick questions where the answer can be anything!
2nd tip, never wear a Cornwall rugby shirt when taking theory test in Wales

Only people who have passed say that :p Like Chris Tarrant always says, "It's only easy if you know the answer."

As long as you are well prepared by studying the Highway Code and similar books, the question matter shouldn't be a problem. What IS a problem is when people rush through and don't read the question properly. Compare "What should you do if...." with "What should you not do if....". Time shouldn't be a problem either. 40 minutes are allowed for this part of the test and most people finish in about 20. You can review your answers as many times as you like.

For any multiple choice test, don't plump for the first answer that looks good. There may be one better. Eliminate all the wrong answers and have a reason for eliminating them.

True. If you know you're stuff, you'll pass. Not knowing the highway code may not be a problem for the "common sense" questions, but there are more specific questions which require specialist knowledge, such as the minimum tread depth on a car tyre, stopping distances, age of a car at first MOT, which pedestrian crossings have (or don't have) the flashing amber light.. etc.

Best advice i can give for hazard perception test is not to click once for a hazard then sit back. Hazards develop in various stages. If you see a video of a person walking along the pavement, of course you're going to click as its a potentional hazard; the person may step out into the road. If the person looks over their shoulder, CLICK AGAIN. The hazard has developed further (the person is more likely to cross now) and this will be the click that counts. At the end of a clip, its not unusual to have six or more flags lit at the bottom of the screen.

Finally, get there in plenty of time, especially if you've never been to the place before. Now is the time to check you have BOTH parts of your driving licence to hand. When i went along with my mate DIS, to his theory test, i sat in the waiting room and couldn't believe the number of nibs that were turned away as they only brought the photocard part. Without the paper counterpart, the licence is incomplete and you can't take the test.

Enjoy the experience and good luck :)

1.6 c.m is the minimum legal depth, the tucan crossing can be used by mounted cyclists and peds and has no amber lights :p

as for the hazard perception i feel pretty comfident about that :)

Sweet. As well as the toucan, the puffin crossing also has no flashing amber light. The flashing amber is only at pelican crossings ;)

btw, its millimetres, not centimetres on a tyre. Driven any tractors recently?

shit! i knew that

Oh, take your full license, the actual licence and the photo part (and the other stuff they ask for, cant remember now) else they might not let you take the test at all.

Look up signs in the highway code too, they have some like that, its all computer driven these days so they show pictures and say "what should you do if.." and stuff.

Though tbh mine was a motorbike theory test, so car whilst it is the same would have some different questions (and look up what you need to get your car taxed ;))

I passed both my theory / practical in the last few months, and yeah, the practical was pretty easy. The thing to remember is:

1: Safety. Don't have an accident, and dont cause someone else to have an accident.
2: Flow of traffic. Don't fuck it up too much or angry motorists will cave in your skull with a tyre iron.

So you are looking for the answer that is the "safest" yet doesn't involve stopping in the middle of the road and stopping the traffic from flowing. :D

As for the hazard perception test, I only just passed that. Not because I couldn't see the sheep on the road, but because the videos use this stupid "window" system. When the authors of the video think you should see the hazard, the window opens and clicking within, say, 5 seconds gets you the maximum points. Clicking within the 5 seconds after that would get you less points etc, and then pretty soon the window is closed, and no matter how many times you click, you just don't get any points.

Being the careful and considerate driver that I am (no, really!) I would see a potential hazard, think "Hmm, he's going to reverse out of there and I bet he hasn't seen me. Best slow down." and then click. About fifteen seconds later, the window opens and it's my second click that registers because I want to change direction (to move out of the way). Bah. :D

Good luck!
