This is somewhat suprising..

"2005
Holographic mass storage media are introduced to the world market. The Holodisk is scanned with a laser and even the introductory model can contain amounts of data which are more than 100 times bigger than the maximum capacity of conventional mass media based on magnetic fields." - http://cp.neocron.com/10/history

"Holographic storage devices could be on sale within two years, according to US firm and Bell Labs spin-off InPhase Technologies which demonstrated a prototype holographic drive this week.

InPhase says this prototype will be the foundation of its forthcoming Tapestry range of holographic drives, which it plans to launch commercially before the end of next year, according to reports, with data capacities ranging from 200GB to 1.6TB on a single disk." - http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/storage/0...39183215,00.htm

You didn't know? They've already started creating Ceres disks with this technology, they just don't want you to know about them... :p

Brad']Shame DVDs only been around a few years max,

DVDs have been commercially availble since 1995.
The technlogy they are based on was developed in the late 1980s.
They are OLD. You can expect a similar time-span before theses holodisks are household items too.
In the mean time, DVD is going to be replaced by HDTV, which will require you to buy a new TV, HDTV player, and all your movies on HDTV disks (which will most likely just be another optical disc with higher data capcity, probably the same multiplier between DVD and HDTV as there was between CD and DVD. Oh, and HDTV is an 80s idea too. It just fell flat on its face back then.)

yeah but what more do you want on a DVD, movie wise i mean, you can get a 2 hour film +, plus more special features than you can shake a stick at, what more could you want? I suppose all 3 films in a trilogy on one disc mebbe...

HDTV = High Defintion TeleVision.
HDTV resolution is hugely higher than DVD resolution. DVD really isnt that great a quality. Fine for your home 28" TV, but if you try to blow it up a lot, lik on a 40"+ plasma or a digital projector, you notice.
Also, the marketing people will find some way of making you buy, hence forcing you to upgrade.
