Often the server is shut down for maintenance - just wondered what is done in this time?

I just wondered if for maintenance they did something like give hard drives a really good shake + poke with screwdrivers...

I'd imagine so, defragment them, run maintainance... check the application logs, do a checksum on the files, apply new application patches [like critical updates and service packs for applications KK uses and aren't developed by them].

They use this time to reboot the servers and things like that - ensuring that lag is kept to a minimum.
