The new music scene won't ever be the same again.
Best DJ ever.

He was one of the few people left in the music industry who was there for the love of music.

You'd have heard of a lot fewer artists without him.

Admittedly if you don't live in the UK I wouldn't expect you to know of him.

Being in NY, I never heard his voice or saw what he looked like but I know him from Nirvana's "Peel Sessions for the BBC", along with Sonic Youth's "Peel Sessions" and I think he was also involved with The Vaselines...

Sorry for your loss guys.

anyone who enjoys music, rather then consuming it, should know john peel.
where most radiostations play whatever the big companies are flogging/pushing, john peel gave airplay to lesser know acts in attempt
to keep it all a bit diversified and grassroot.
doing a peel sessions is imo the highest achievement for any selfrespecting
band. fuck the eMpTyV awards, they don't mean shit.

and i'm from fucking belgium, never heard one show, but i try to get my hands
on anything they/strange fruit has released

amen

Hehe, you would finish listening to 'Lock Up Your Mountain Bikes' by Half Man Half Biscuit, and then suddenly be thrust into a mess of screaming and thrashing.

Gonna be a crap without him, my house mate used to know him, she's kinda sad atm.

btw, HMHB rock.

if you mean the 'back at the DHSS' HMHB, they're fucking weird.
me thinks Wat Tyler took an example from these guys.

There is a brilliant song which goes something like this;

I fancy I'll open a stationers, stock quaint notepads for weekend pagans..
While you were out at the roll right stones, I came and set fire to your shed.

Cos you probably work at an all night garage (x3)
With Talk Radio on.

And you curse my soul cos I don't want petrol (x2)
I only came down for a tube of Pringles, (sour cream and chives)

And because you got to get off your fat arse to go and get me crisps, and you got to go round the counter and it's really... inconvienient.
And when you come back you toss them into that slimy metal tray device thing that seperates us and you say;
'one pound thirty five...'
As opposed to;
'that'll be one pound thirty five please sir'
This of course done to annoy me but has the opposite effect, it amuses me no end, because suddenly have other things to buy.

I'll have two scotch eggs and a jar of marmite (x3)
What sandwiches have you got?

Well now you've become quite irrate, and your voice become louder, and you start to sound like lead-belly at the depot.

'I got ham'
'I got cheese'
'I got chicken'
'I got beef'
I got tuna-sweetcorn. I. got. tuna-sweetcorrnn'....

I'll have 10 kitkats and a motoring atlas (x2)
And a blue CD on the hallmark label. That's sure to be good.

genius.

For those that didn't really know him, he was responsible for breaking bands such as:

Jimi Hendrix
Black Sabbath
Pulp
Led Zepelin
The Pixies
Roxy Music
Pink Floyd
The Undertones
The Fall
The Jam
Joy Division
The Smiths
PJ Harvey
The Delgados
White Stripes
Etc...

He was instrumental in getting Americal outfits like Public Enemy and Nirvana heard in the UK. He also played Jungle, Hip Hop etc. Such eclectic tastes....

He was a major player and as such completely irreplacable. He is [was] the godfather of modern music culture in the UK.
