I am looking for a HDD for our "Home-Server". I was thinking about a WD Raptor, but the machine doesn't have S-ATA. Any alternatives?

alternative: get s-ata :p

just searched newegg.com, no results for 10,000 rpm IDE drives, nor for 7,200 rpm IDE drives with 16 meg buffers. frankly if you don't have serial ata (well, you could try and go SCSI O_o but i wouldn't), you'll find similar performance from pretty much all the 7200 rpm, 8 meg buffer IDE drives that are on the market.

the moral of the story: get s-ata :p

What do you need a fast drive for? What will this machine be doing?

Ya, go the raptors, but if you can go the 74gig raptors... when they made them they made everything to do with them slightly better than the 36giger's.
I had to buy a raid card for my raptors, but it was worth it....

So my advice... Raid up 2 74gig raptors. fastest drives out there without spending $1000 on a scsi setup.
