Ok, i kinda fucked up my video card by doing a bios flash and the pc shut down halfway :-)

No bios, no card :-)

I'm now choosing between these two cards, any suggestions?

i'd definatley suggest you get the 9800 Pro.

The 9800 series were far superior to the Geforce FX series, especially when it comes to thinks like Shaders, which are becoming very important in current games.

I really dont suggest you buy a Geforce FX.

Radeon X800 Pro, get that. Its only 400$(usd) (AT MOST) and its better then the 500$(usd) GeForce 6800 in some cases. (Example, It scored better then the 6800 ultra in CS:Source benchmarks, but not at well as the Radeon X800 P.E. (500$USD)).

you buy the wrong card anyway :p

if its the 9800 it suddenly fucks up your games and if its the 5950 the prize drop into low levels you could never imagine.
you should have wait 2-3 month before breakin your card

Its only 400$

hello ????? 400$ or even € for a GFX that is sold for half around christmas and where theres only 4 games that can use them until then ???

prank dit you read the topic @ all ? a very quick look on the site i buy all my stuff.. cheapest x800 pro 450 euro @ least.. and you can get a 9800 pro for just over 200 euro's

anyway i would say go for the 9800 pro.. the geforce fx series weren't the best around ( passed over them from geforce 4 to 6800 :p ) anyway go for a radeon in this case..

I bought a 9800 pro a few month back. Very nice card. Im running Doom 3 on High details, 4x Anti Aliasing and everything else on the full settings. Thats on my crappy lil XP2400+ with 1gb RAM.

Between those two cards get the 9800 pro with 256 megs of ram if you can swing it.

You can fix your old card. Get a PCI video card, plug it in, use that to boot the puter and flash ur AGP card with its original bios.

But if you will be buying a new gfx card anywayz and the bios thingie was just an excuse to ur parents, then u should know that ATI > ALL

9800 Pro, definitely. I wouldn't ever buy one of the GeForce FX series, their ATi counterparts completely blow them away.

Yes, I did read the topic, but I still suggest an X800 PRO.

The one for 450 euro must be the X800 P.E. Because I bought my PRO for only 412$ w/o shipping about a week after it came out.

GT > Pro
XT PE > Ultra

9800Pro > FX

Nuff said.

U can also repair it by making a diskette (i just hope you made it look for disks before booting into windows) with a autoexec.bat with the command to flash it back to the original... if it all goes well you woint haveto do nottin, and itll work again

I love fanboi idiots who say things like this. You look at the benchmarks, tests and they generally show that while the 9800 do tend to squeeze a couple more FPS out of most games ,there's very little between them.

I would say nvidia because:
1) Always used them, never had any problems.
2) Their linux support is far superior.

Generally I would go with 128MB. The reason for this is that 256MB cards:
a) are double the price
b) Generally give little performance increase for the vast majority of games
c) In some cases can actually hinder performance as their memory clock can be slower than that of a 128MB card.

wouldent 256 megs of ram let you tweak some settings so you could store textures and things uncompressed? like i hear doom3 ultra mode needs 512 ram on a vid card becouse of that.

i also would have to say go with the 9800 pro. i have had no problems with them ever. even though my 5900 is arriving soon i would still trade it for any 9800 pro. if im lucky it will have 2.2 memory and turn into a 5950 ultra nicely.

Yes, a few of the very latest games will use 256MB of memory if you have it. However that list basically comprises, AFAIK, of Doom 3 and FarCry atm, so unless you majorly play those 2 games, or you can confirm that the games you play can use all 256MB of memory, I'd say go for the 128MB card.

I love fanboi idiots

Ha, and he calls us the idiots.

I was the BIGGEST nvidia 'fanboi' until the Geforce 6800, decided to try ATI, and now know they are FAR superior.

Hey get the GeForce 6800, now those top ATI and the FX 5950. I have seen the test ran on Doom 3, My God ran Doom3 at I think 90-fps. The 9800pro runs it at 60 fps, and GeForce Fx5950 at 45fps. Save your money and get the New GeForce series or the PCIe Vid Card.

Thx for the info.

I know i could have done the autoexec thingie, but my computer won't even make it past post, not even on another system with the card in.

Guess i'll get the pro and try to flash that to an xt.

Ok, i've been looking up prices and stuff for these cards.

Seems like a5900xt or even the 5950ultra is not the way i want to go anymore.

Then comes the alternative of a 9800 pro which comes at around 230 euros here.
So i look up for cards with the most chance of a r360 core, turns out to be the msi model.... (for flashing a 9800xt 128mb bios in there)

Then while looking that up i stumble upon a MSI NX6800-TD 128MB for around 310 euros.

The performance on this card is a LOT better than the 9800 pro, and since i wann be using this card for a while i might go with that one.
It's tuned down version of the 6800GT, meaning 4 of the pipelines have been disabled but the new rivatuner should be able to reactivate those.

Decisions, decisions.
