as the title of the thread suggests, who has been able to run two clients at once on one comp?
i'm just curious cause my comp chokes in an uber fashion when i try to run two clients on this comp. half the time i have to reset the computer. the other half, i have to wait several minutes for the fuckin thing to get back to the desktop before i can maximize the original client. it's brutal!
but i've heard of people who run it with few problems. how the fark is this done? could the athlon64 be a bad cpu for running in this environment (two similtaneously running clients on one comp) ?
i have 1 gig of corsair 3200 LL memory, but i've heard before that neocron doesn't hog memory as much as it hogs cpu power.
anyone else with athlon xp's / athlon 64's have this "problem"?

When I've done it in the past, I had like 3 fps and it took like 5 years to alt tab.

Works quite ok on my machine with a hyperthreading P4 but when I tried to do the same on friend's machine with athlon xp it was just like you described, no go.

I can do it okay on mine - but when I try it on a more uber machine in my hoose, the bloody thing spontaneously combusts!

Go figure

Yup its possible to run 2 instances of Nc on one comp, but u need a verry good pc for it. I have 2 accounts and I tried to drive a noob-alt from the 2nd account to MB by a char from the first account. (FPS arround 20-25 , without any probs :D). Really easy to trade items between alts ;)
Sys specs:
3.2 Ghz Pentium 4 HT
1280 MB DDR
Geforce 5900 FX

eww wtf is it that's allowing u guys to run numerous instances ;/
i was gonna assume it might be hyperthreading until u posted, richard :P

I run 2 often (and sometimes even forget I have a second copy going), I run 3 fairly often, have run 4 before with a purpose, and have hit 6 copies just for the hell of it.

1.3 Athlon

I'd like to know, but I think I heard it was an exploit. If it is an exploit, I really, really don't want to know. :P

Edit Neocron.ini

Put in this line:
LOCALPORT="?????"

Just replace the question marks with a number. I usually start picking numbers like 11000, 12000, 13000, etc.
Someone else I know would separate his by 5000. He usually ran 10000, 15000, 20000 for the different copies.

EDIT:
I almost forgot to post this part!
Run one copy, then open the neocron.ini and change the port number before you try to log in the next character. It compares ports when you pick the character to log. If it's trying to connect on the same port number, you get something like "join proxy failed" and booted back to the login screen.

Or you could always have 2 copies of NC on your computer and leave the ini's set to different numbers...

Yeah, I've *never* understood how Freaky could run 3-4 instances and still play fine on one.

When I had an Athlon 2100+, 512MB DDR400, and a GF3, I could run two instances, but it was about 20-30fps in the active one and if someone started shooting at me, forget it, I was dead. It was just good for tradeskilling or transferring gear.

Now I have an Athlon 3000+, 1GB DDR400, and the same old GF3 (tho a 5700U is en route), and I can run two copies relatively fine. 40-50fps in the active one and I can hunt without a problem, however, I do my best to avoid PvP ;)

The best solution is still dual logging my older 1ghz machine for any non-PvP related task if my PvP char needs to stay online.

That's what I do. I have a Neocron directory and a Neocron2 directory - guess I'm gonna have to change that naming convention, eh? They both have different neorcon.ini's... I think I'm gonna try making shortcuts in one directory to the others tho so the rest of my ini files stay the same... sms's, controls, screenshots, etc... I wonder if that will work.....

OK nibbish question:

Where is the ini file :p ?

I run them both windowed and i have found that you get decent performance if you have one of them minimized while running the other and just swap them round.

AMD Athlon 1600, FX5700, 396 SDRAM

In your neocron directory.

i.e. C:\Neocron just looks like a text file with a gold badge on.

When the alt-tab bug happened, so that we couldn't alt-tab, I tried running windowed mode for the first time and it sucked. Some people claimed better performance, but even running 640x480, I was barely able to run 2 copies, and even running a solo copy of NC sucked for performance...

I run 2 sometimes. It does'nt lag my pc but i think it lags my connection (my old one [512k]) ...in windowmode i usually get frames of around 40 - 50 in p2 but my zone times go up alot. Ive got a 1.5mb line now so hopefully i wont lag but i have'nt tested it yet.

My pc's x800pro
2.6xp @ 2.2ghz
1gb ddr400
7200rpm hdd
windows xp pro
the rest doesnt matter. :p

I don't know if anybody knows this, but you can have about 8999 accounts on at once, I think, the lag would be fucking aweful with that ammount but thats how many accounts you can get on at once, unless the LOCALPORT = "<number>" could be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ect digits, in which case you can an infinate ammount of accounts on at once.

Freaky Fryd

Well, I use 4 and 5 digit numbers...haven't tried using less or more though...

Thats alot of money you'd be paying each month to have 2249 accounts ( 2249 x £10 [roughly] = £22490 a month to play) :p

I run two clients, just run off batch files to change the ini's over.

If interested the code is really easy I have two copies of the ini called neocron1.ini and neocron2.ini the is :

copy neocron1.ini neocron.ini
neocronlauncher.exe

And save the text file with a extension of .bat instead of .txt place all the files along with the bat file and make a shortcut to place on your desktop.
Just repeat this again for the 2nd one and you sorted.

Easy :)

Easiest way to run 2 nc's is like this :

Install nc again to a different location on your pc.
Patch it fully to retail (by using your patches you already have).
Go into the second nc install folder and find the neocron.ini file (the one with a cog on the file).
Open it and edit it by "adding" this line to it LOCALPORT = "xxxx"

Where "xxxx" is you put any 4 digit number except 8000. I myself use "8003".

To run them both without problems i start my proper nc, windowmode it by holding shift on start wait for it load then alt tab, run other nc launcher directly from the folder (no shortcut) windowmode that and wait for a bit, depending how fast your pc is depends how fast it will load and believe me it can take its time sometimes so be patient. Then i always connect with my original nc to my server first followed by the second nc.
