View Full Version : [OT] Earn a GMail invite

Damn - Looks like GMail are sending out invites again when its desire is running low :wtf:

I looked in my GMail today and found five invites - That's one for each forum I go on. If I was in my usual mood, I'd have probably done fastest-poster-wins, but as I'm as I'm feeling bored and needing entertainment (as are probably a few here ;)) I thought I'd make the recipient work for it

Anyone who's been at GMail Swap (http://www.gmailswap.com/) knows what I'm gonna say - If you want it, tell me what you'd offer for the invite. Unlike GMail Swap though, you don't have to follow up on it - I just want to see what some of the community's eccentrics would think up :D

The most original & humorous offer gets it, and my decision is final :p This runs for 24 hours when the winner will get the invite & this topic gets a CbT (or until Niddy shuts this, er...unsanctioned competition down ;))

BTW: Think of something more than a sex emote - That's too easy :p

What other emails offer 1GB free space?

Quite a few - But they never surfaced until after GMail was announced

Well my hard drive is currently limiting my inbox to 118GB. Opening an email is as close to instant as it needs to be, and I can do any number of searches at great speed without having to load the results a page at a time.

Internet based email...I've never understood why anyone uses it.

I neither want nor need the invite - google sucks the earth, and as it continues to suck the earth, so shall the earth shrink, and while it shrinks, it's surface shall peel back to reveal the secret race of mole men - one of them is called frank.

The molemen sahll proclaim google as thier idol - seeing as it freed them by sucking the earth, they also idolise anything related to google, therefore GMail invites are hot product.

I want and need A Gmail invite due to the forthcoming moleman invasion.

K, cheers.

It is great if you want an email address that isn't going to have to change everytime you move, change country or even change machine. Probably not a big deal for you, certainly is for me.

Anyway google is the best I've seen. Extremly fast and extremly fast to find something. As well as thread stacking, and filters and a cool spam filter. Oh and you can also download it to your computer using other newsreader.

Translation:

How about a very nice ride, my Homie,

A yamaha ATV with 18inch wheels

I would have got the one with Spinning peripherals, but alas these wheels seemed more attractive to me. Now you and your significant other can enjoy the beauty of offroad travel, amongst other things and look rather spiffing at the same time, my homie.

GMail might be good for those who need an "anonymous"-ish email not tied to any particular organization. You certainly don't want it for privacy's sake.

Google searches all mail for random keywords and inserts advertisements in your mail based on information they gathered from it. Sweet huh? I'm not a privacy freak or anything, but seems to me GMail's best use will be for illegal uses. Not many legal activities need 1GB of storage.

People do business all the time through emails.. Just yesterday I got like 10mb worth of emails because of business. I bought my own webserver though for emails just so I could have full control over my shit and it could be registered with my own domain name.

I 100% agree, where the plus side in having a gMail account?

I thought about it when it was first announced and i stillo don't udnerstand why its worth having one.

"Fast search" isn't google fast enough?
"1gig" you can have like infinite.. if you use ur own PC.
And why do ppl want to login online to view emails? Can you use pop3/smtp wiht it?

Gmail owns son .. the ads are the same as google dumps next to your searches, for example, if you search for car, you get a little bar at the right side with used car sellers, the same thing with gmail, only with the email subject... i'm more concerned about a hotmail account for privacy, knowing m$.....

The search and archive functions are FENOMENAL, i totally love it when a email session with replys gets listed like a conversation, it makes your mailbox much more organized

The only benefit I can really see of an online mail service (other than some of the ones already pointed out) is that you don't HAVE to store the stuff on your computer. You free up space. You can use it like free webspace to hold anything.

Do a search for "pop goes the gmail". I think they are busy rev'ing up to the lastest google though. Google are also working on one. They have a notifer made http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper

That applies for any web based email. Google only scans the open email you are reading and displays adverts using adSense. It doesn't read it and go "Hey Google look what the contents are about". Based on Googles business creedo of "Do no evil", I would be more inclined to trust them, then hotmail/yahoomail.

Unfortunatley I don't have much to give you. I'm from the poorest part of India, and I work in a Malaysian sweatshop sewing footballs for Nike and Adidas for 5 pence per ball, while evil socialists whip me if I dont sew fast enough. If you give me a GMail invite, I will promise to put it to good use, and perhaps sell it in the next doorway I sleep in, to help feed my family for at least another day.

You would have to have a gmail account to know.

Off the top of my head though.

- Thread Stacking (which is great if you are on a heavy mailing list). Also stacks inlined text to make it neater.
- Advanced Spam filter
- Custom filters (live and on new mail)
- Fast customizable search system.
- Hotkeys (which I don't use, so not sure if it is good or not)
- Dynamic Address book with fast search for fields.
- Personal level indicators (tells you how relevent the mail is to you)
- Snippets option on mail list.

and it uses a labelling system instead of folders, which I thought was crap until I started using it (with filters running on incoming mail). It is very easy to find a mail in question you are looking for.

And it is still beta so I suspect there is more to added as some of those features were not there when I got my account.

What he said.

The 1GB storage feature seems to be the hook rather than the main reason - The interface and other features they've put in it makes it my favourite webmail so far :)

But like has been said, I don't use it for important emails - Mainly for registering on sites/forums and non-important mails ;)

I'm cutting short the contest time because my toddler niece is being a handful and because I need some time to actually hand out the invites ;)

I intended this to be a LOL-type thread and some of you guys don't disappoint :D I hope readers got as much a laugh out of this as I did :) Because of the turnout, I'm now giving out three of my five out (fourth was already given to a forum friend and the last is being reserved for an RL friend ;)).

Anyway, the winners are as follows :)
Opar gets the "someone at Christian Aid hire this guy" invite
Psycho_Soldier gets the "fo' shizzle my nizzle" (aka "what would Jeremy Clarkson drive in a mid-life crisis" ;)) invite
Lastly (and most deserved), Spermy gets the "WTF is he on? Seriously? :wtf:" invite

All three of you PM me with a valid email address so I can send your invites :)

Runners-up are thebee for the "So tempting..." award, and Jailbird for the "About to be bitch-slapped by an NDA" award ;)

A [CbT] tag is now on this thread, so post while you can and I'll see ya when I next have invites :) (or when someone else wants to rip off this idea :p)

I know it might be good, hey, the best email service around even, but why, in gods name, are some people trading some of the things ive seen going thru gmail for an email account.

Would you people with it HONESTLY say they're worth 100's of pounds ? (GBP)

I'll give you my salted hat for the account btw. I didnt have to eat it because I bet my mate id eat my hat, salted, if SP2 didnt fuck his system up.

He spent a week fixing that one
