Cable Broadband Query

So i got 1.5mb (NTL) line installed and tested out its speeds and came as a shock to get 200kb/sec ...is this right? I guess its fast compared to the 50kb/sec i used to get with dial-up 512k broadband but still....

Im happy with steam performance but steam has yet to disapoint me, i used to get 400kb/sec on 512k connection and i now get just under 1mb/sec with this 1.5mb line, then again..not many servers have the bandwidth of Italy or can transfer 2gb/min :cool:

Anyway is 200kb/sec on normal servers about right or is it running slow?

If you have a 1.5mb line you should download at 192kb/s. So yes, 200kb/s is right :)

yeah sounds right and ppl need to start to use Mbit and not mb :) 1.5 mb is aprox 15 Mbit arpox 1.5 mb/sec and so on. And im sure you didnt get 400kb/sec on a 512 connection?.

On steam i get 400kb/sec with 512k connection. Steam is an amazing server that everyone seems to hate but HL2 will be distributed through steam and retail outlets so they wouldnt make you require steam to play HL2 if they thought it wasnt stable.

512k to me is a 512 kbit wich is a max of 60k/sec with some luck..

Buffered data/Compression. Well still if it is actually a 512 kbit connection he would have allready have downloaded most of the file for him to reach that kind of speed.

a 512 kbit connection is always a 512 kbit connection or have I missed something really important :) It's not like the 10 mbits I have atm will with some leet tool or method reach 40 mbit. If its limited to 10 mbit it is limited to 10 mbit.

512k offers a 'max' dl speed of 64kb/s.

512kB = 512K bytes per second = 64k bits per second :)

In other words, divide 512 by 8 (8 bits in a byte) to get the totaly you will download at. So 1.5mb line = 1536 bytes/8 = 192kb/s :D

there is no way you can send 400 kilobytes over a 512 kilobit line

1 byte is 8 bits... so
to get the ammount of bytes per second, you divide the _bit_ speed with 8.
I have a 10 megaBIT connection that means the fastest i will be able to
download is 10 / 8 = 1.25 megaBYTE / second

its jus clever use of words on ntls part. the same with their digital tv service telling you you have 90+ channels for whatever a month, shame you wont watch 85 of em... i used to work for em so i know how they work.

The new line is running flat-out at that rate. Depending on the number of people in your area and how well trained the NTL monkeys were that wired it up you may find it deteriorates at times.


You never got 400kbytes over a 512kbit line. Steam is lying or you are misreading it.

Nope I have a 1.5 Meg line with NTL, they just upgraded us from 1 meg to 1.5 meg, a nice free upgrade :D
