is this to do with the in-built firewall now disableing everything by default?

as far as i understand it, yes. The firewall and virus checker is switched on automatically. This is causing the programs listed to not work

I upgraded to sp2 about 7 days ago. I haven't had any issues with any of the software I have on that list...as for the firewall, you can disable right when windows xp boots up, the virus checker is only a tool to monitor your anti-virus software...apparently it's a little iffy, because it didnt realize I had norton installed and it turned itself off on boot.

You can disable all of that stuff, you don't need it if you have your own firewall or if you have zonealarm, but software firewalls, imo, are a joke.

I know what you mean... but I still bother to reply as I got nothing else to do at the moment :p
I mean... all firewalls are software firewalls... its either some server, a firmware or something else, but I've never heard of a firewall doing it by hardware means :p infact... do you actualy have port xxx physical on your systems? :p

And ontopic... Its about freaking time the pcn00bs around the world get some forced protection... just hoping this virusscan is not what you say, but is actualy a virusscan *sigh* ... but overal would save me lots of time at work fixing the next fuckup of some porn/ware looking n00b that got infected by some crack program or virus.

There is a known issue with the firewall at the moment too.

Apprantly any program can just switch off the firewall. So your better off keeping whatever firewalls you have for now.

Not sure if there is a patch coming for it or not.

all you have to do to make that entire list of programs to work again is to disable the Windows firewall.
however i'm not trying SP2 out!

i could make you an dos-program that turns the filewall off..
then turns of that nice XP look, sends me your IP number and shuts your pc down.

I've had sp2 for a lil while now and havn't had any problems. You can either disable the firewall entirely or go in and give it an exception to make sure it allows your program to work.

So far my experience has been that unlike most firewalls this one lets most programs access the net right from the start, however it pops up a box sayign if you want to continue to allow this program access or disable it. For example with NC, i started without any problems. Once I quit Nc and went back to my desktop, I noticed a window asking if I wanted to allow Client.exe. Most firewalls do the opposite, they block until you say it's ok. So this isn't as secure, but its much more user friendly, especialy for the noobs.

The virusscan thing is pointless, it was able to recongnize that I have Norton installed, but it couldn't talk to the software. Evidently it's supposed to monitor your antivirus software and make sure you have the latest anti virus info/dat files. I have norton already set to yell at me every so often to update, so I disabled the windows virusscan thingy.

What I absolutely love about SP2 though is the upgrades to IE. It's about damn time IE had basic functionality that most other browsers have. There's no excuse for how IE had plugins that you couldn't see or uninstall. Now finnaly you can disable them and monitor what loads with your browser. They've expanded the permissions under Internet Tools so that you have an amazing amount of control over how the browser behaves. Now plugins are no longer auto downloaded or auto prompted. They're sent to the new Information Bar were you can click and approve of an action if you want.

This is mainly for the average net browser who automaticly clicks Yes to most everything he sees. Soo many web pages trick you into downloading their software with a innoculous Click yes to view this page. The majority of spyware/trojans spread through this. Now unless you specificly check the info bar and allow an install, it won't happen.

my $0.02... FUCK the included firewall... rely on a real 3rd party one...From what I understand the XP firewall only controls incoming data, not outgoing data, making it about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

I run ZoneAlarm Pro on this box and have recently changed my usb adsl modem for a proper adsl router, with a built in firewall. I've never had any problems with either, and no annoying worms/adware/etc. It might help that I run win2k and most virus writers target XP though.

Most things that will affect Windows XP will also affect Windows 2000 due to having the same (or very similar) core coding.

I find that having a dual-layered network of hardware firewall/NAT on the router/gateway and a good software firewall like ZAP or Sygate on your comp protects you from most things. Unless you're a clueless niblet who shouldn't be using a computer in the first place. :p

@Carinth, you are so right about IE. It's about time it got this type of functionality.

@Husk, he's talking about dedicated peices of equipment that do nothing (or almost nothing) but firewalling.

Just to clarify, the built-in firewall does not get switched on if you already have a software firewall installed and (maybe?) active. I don't know if it only detects certain major brands like ZoneAlarm, though. The virus checker tool just tries to monitor your virus scanner to see if it has the latest updates/dat files/etc. Unfortunately, it doesn't recognize Symantec AV Corporate version 8 *or* 9. At least, not yet. :o
