there are alot of good cards out there right now. but from what ive seen and read, the 5900 and the 9700 pro are probably the best cards for the money.

I hope you understand that the XT in the Geforce line stands for 'pants' its like the old MX tag so the 5900XT is worse than the 5900 which is worse than the 9800pro which costs lthe same as the 5900XT.

With the radeon 9600's, we had 9600, 9600 SE, 9600pro, 9600XT, 9600 pro EZ, 9650, and a few more monikers.

Just have to do some scutwork before you make up your mind.

Just do your self a favor and dont buy the FX series card. If you dont have cash for new generation nVIDIA cards just buy ATI. I have Saphire 9800pro right now and im uber happy with it :D Doom 3 here I come!

I would go for this one: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-131-406&depa=0

Or if you can shell out a bit more 9800pro.

The FX5900XT card is pretty good tbh. But it's a bit worse than 9800pro.

Anyway, don't go for anything with numbers beneath 5900(For nvidia) or 9700(ATI).

If you REALLY have to you could get a 9600 card, it'll run things pretty good, in todays games anyway..

i just built myself a new comp about a week an a half ago

3 ghz pentium4

machspeed xcaliber mother board

a gig of corsair 3200 dual channel ram

and i decided to go with the nvidia 6800 128 ram model for obvious budget reasons.

the reason i chose the 6800 over the ATI cards was the directx 9.0c support that most of the current and even newer ATI cards lack
and i thought i heard somewhere that the new necron engine wil impliment this version of dx9 , dont quote me i may be misinformed.

but i do have to say my combination of components makes neocron run so fast even in op fights but i really think that it does have to do a great deal with your processor core and bus speed atm , as the dev team has stated before that neocron atm is very cpu intensive but with the new engine that will change and make the game less of a cpu burden and more of a gpu freindly game drastically improving performance....

so to wrap this up, in a nutshell..... stick with ATI 9600's and above or nvidia
5600's and above and and hopefully the new game engine will take care of the rest, hope i was able to help

To be honest, anything except one of the GeForce FX line will get the job done. Ideally you should be looking at a 9800 Pro for your price range, that'll handle anything you can throw at it for now. Apart from the previous generation where the Nvidia cards sucked ass though, generally it's simply ATi for better image quality, and Nvidia for higher frame rates. Most of the benchmarks you'll find follow the same trend, Nvidia storming without AA or AF, ATi performing better with both cranked up. Except Nvidia are also better in OpenGL too. :p

GeForce Lines are Ok, I had 3 diff cards from diff brands, the 5200 wich was ok, it ran games good, Then I went to 9700 for the ATI, and I went back to GeForce 5700 256. It runs great. Here are some things I have learned about the two major brands.

Nvidia.
nvidia is more for games than ATI is. Nvidia will actually work with the game devs to help make the game run best for thier cards. Nvidia GeForce can run most games without compatibility problems. One thing about Nvidia you have to watch out what brand you buy. Look for the major brands like BioStar, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, etc. I think Asus has the best ratings for thier video cards.

ATI's
Dont get me wrong ATI is a good video card. ATi is more for the Vid Production, Vid Editing, Digital Imaging, stuff like that. But ATI does not work with many game devs. They do but not as much as Nvidia does. ATI has compatibility problems with alot of games, more than GeForce does. ATI is good in one thing but not the other, same way with Geforce. Gamers use ATI's but it depends on what game you are playing.

And dark_reaper is right on the money in my opinion.

Ati doesnt have compatibility problems with a lot of games. Its got minor compatibility issues with few games...most of whcih are solved with latest drivers or game patches.

It goes like this. In Opengl Nvidia>Ati. In Direct3d Ati>Nvidia. Without AA and AF Nvidia>Ati. With AA and AF Ati>NVidia.
