Seriously, we need OT sub-forums put into the Community Talk forums :p

Anyway, now that I have a job and some cash in my pocket, I'm looking to replace the mobile I lost in March (Don't ask, but it involved Salford and a train ) with a camera phone. :D Only question is which one o_O

First thought was to check the T-Mobile Pay As You Go phones (As my last one was a T-PAYG), and found the Siemens MC60 (http://www.phones4u.co.uk/shop/shop_payg_details.asp?ItemKey=114078), Sony Ericsson t610 (http://www.phones4u.co.uk/shop/shop_payg_details.asp?ItemKey=7955), and Motorola v300 (http://www.phones4u.co.uk/shop/shop_payg_details.asp?ItemKey=112665). Only problems was that the last mobile was a Siemens M35i and was stable but boring (and the MC60 looks the same), and I've seen quite a few of the t610 around. That left the v300 - Until I saw Orange's v500 (http://www.phones4u.co.uk/shop/shop_payg_details.asp?ItemKey=114079) and Vodafone's v525 (http://www.phones4u.co.uk/shop/shop_payg_details.asp?ItemKey=112667), two seemingly better phones for a lower price :wtf:

Next problem is that I'm a little uncertain with the Vodafone and Orange tariffs, and the O2 ones can go screw themselves (the few calls I make would cost more on O2 than on T-Mobile). So now I'm stuck with figuring out which phone to go for.

Then I have to waft the flames a little more by considering Pay Monthly (even though I don't use the phone much) to get a larger range of phones, and find this (http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?paymentPlanType=mixit&nmid=phones_overview&pmid=7130&menuid=ctl_phones_details) and this (http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?paymentPlanType=mixit&nmid=phones_overview&pmid=7132&menuid=ctl_phones_details). And that's not even taking into account the ones from 3 (http://www.three.co.uk/handsets/paymonthlyhandsets.omp). WHY THE HELL DOES THERE HAVE TO BE SO MUCH CHOICE??? 8| <quietly backs away from the coffee>

Sorry about that :wtf: Anyway - What was once a simple case of finding a decently-priced colour camera phone has got me considering video phones, bluetooth, etc. Anyone got any knowledge of any of the phones mentioned, or can recommend other phones that be of interest? Network/Manufacturer fanboys welcome ;)

Thanks in advance for anyone helping out :) And I'll swear off the caffeine until BDoY if I can figure out what to go for :D

I myself like the new Samsung SGH-E800 - which I was *so* close to buying after I cracked the screen on my existing phone, which I've now fixed.

It's small, looks great, got a camera on, nice big screen, lotsa memory, slide-up phone, but only dual band, and has none of the advanced stuff such as bluetooth, nor is it on an open platform where you can install custom applications on.

But on second thoughts, I decided to wait for better models come out - which will be very soon.

got a v525 myself, get a datacable, and you can flash it to a v600.. i did that with mine, the camera is ACE, you can encode some mp3's and dump em on it... like 4 or 5 complete songs :D its not a jukebox, and if you flash it it plays these lil movies too... with a mini antenna (or a screw, find something that fits in the antenna hole in your local hardware store :D ) it also is damn small and it's got like everything you'll ever need. One big suggestion, STAY THE HELL AWAY from the live! button (if you flash it u won't have the bullshit everytime you hit the right menu key....) and it's easyly stripped of the (ugly) vodafone logos...

I still can't really see the point to camera phones. Until they get up to at least 2-3 Megapixels the images are only good for exchanging between phones which gets boring very quickly.

I have a P800 which is very good despite being 50% evil.

I can't recommend strongly enough that you avoid Orange. I use T-Mobile atm and haven't had any real problems.

The latest Sharp phone has a megapixel camera.

I would say go for a phone that has J2ME MIDP2.0 as it has really cool features in it (eg. Hook a java app to an SMS listener/camera listener). Also make sure the phone doesn't have any of its features locked. For example the GX10i won't let you upload/download anything except pictures.

They are usefull Jernau, for some emergency or utility photos, remember you carry the phone always with you, but not a good camera...
I use the p800 too, but its too bulky.
2-3 megapixels, but with some kind of focusing system.
I remember a company had made a spiral transducer that changes shape using the piezzo effect, but I cant recall the name. I believe we will soon see those on new phone models

I believe we will soon see those on new phone modelsI've had mine a year or so now and taken about 10 photos of which I've sent two to other people and one of those was by email not MMS. This seems to be fairly normal going by everyone else I know who has one.

Any time I go somewhere I may want a camera I take my Ixus - it's tiny and does the job right.

I just see MMS as another moronic misreading of the market from the people that said SMS was irrelevant and WAP was the "next big thing".

I'm sure if they included decent cameras then some people may use them more but in general they are simply not used after the novelty wears off.

It's probably irrelevant now though I guess as they seem compulsory on all new phones.

I agree the P800 is a tad bulky for a phone but I can easily live with it as I can do so much with it. If you used to carry a PDA and a phone it's less than the combined weight and volume too.

when mobile phone companies were forming the market, they didnt took into account the sms phenomenon. So they started with sms for free (at least here in Greece) the mms would have succeeded more if there werent so many incompatibilities to start with and was not so expensive. Now the sms is going so well that companies started to put little keyboards in there phones (ex. the p910)
the p800 is a great phone, I have mine for aprox a year too, but i really miss a smaller one.
Damn, i also have an ixus!!! but dont use it anymore:D :D

I had a T610 up until recently, it's a very nice phone - IR and Bluetooth are handy, the camera is decent enough I suppose.

I've just upgraded to a 6230, and so far I'm really impressed - it takes the typical memory cards so you can store loads of MP3s, it also plays videos, the camera's nice, with the headphones in it'll store and receive FM radio, and it's smaller than the 3330 was. Cool!

As for network, Vodafone is too expensive,O2 are what I'm on, Orange seem dodgy, haven't heard much about T-Mobile. 3 are a special case - if you're in a major city, they're THE choice - all the cool features, plus amazing tariffs. However, if you live somewhere with crappy service (Cardiff, apparently) then you'll have wasted your time with them.

Thanks for the help guys :D

I went into Phones4u earlier today, determined to get an LG U8810 on ThreePay, had a look at it and said "meh" (Yes, I was wondering why TF I said that myself o_O). Went into T-Mobile before as I was planning on doing before all of this, and bought a Sharp TM100. Seems great, but currently it's doing the "first charge" so I can't have a proper look at it until later :(

Thanks for all the comments - They actually have helped me out from choosing between different phones :)

+reps are going out to everyone who's helped me out (i.e. pretty much everyone who's posted here ;) ), and I'll get a few shots of the phone when it's charged
