now my last video card my radeon 98k pro that was fried from over clocking was a nice card

i got a FX 5600 256meg atm and tbh for the £50 i paid for it (new) its well about that price really

now my system is a half decent system and i think that this is letting me down atm, so i would like to know what you guys think is a good GFX.

Budget £200 (ish).

Running a asus a7n8x-e deluxe so its a Nividia Nforce 2 chip.

Geforce FX 5900XT or Ati 9800 Pro

Or you can wait for the new graphics cards and get a Geforce 6800 or X800 (non Pro, XT, Ultra, GT, whatever).

Leadtek Geforce 5900XT 128MB, bought it for € 209.
Flashed a bios of a 5950 ultra on it, and it's clocked at 475/850 without artefacts or overheating.

So, that's even less than your 200 pounds.

Just wait till the new ones come out, you have half diesent card it should play nc just fine as well as other games. There should be new cards coming out soon(nvidia sli) so the older ones will drop in price as usuall, so the best thing would be wait few months then you will shurley get a great deal.

I'd have to say the ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 250MB version. If you get the right one you can modify it into a XT.

Or you could go Radeon 9800 SE and mod it to Pro

been looking at cards myself have to choose between 9800XT or the 128MB version of the 9800Pro.

anyone tell me if there is in practise a realson to spend the extra?

Doom3 uses upwards of 500mbs video memory in ultra quality mode. So dont let anyone tell ya that 256mb wont be needed by games for a long time. I hear that all the time and it annoys me :)

My advice would be to wait until either the x800pro or 6800GT are around $400US. You can probably find them for that now if you look good. I would choose the 6800GT perosnally. It has 16 pipes and the only difference between it and the beastly 6800Ultra are clock speeds. You will never reach x800xt performance from a x800pro given it is crippled with 12 pipes.

Out of curiosity....what kinda cpu do you have and how much ram?

2.8 barton eh?? WHat kinda cooling you got on that? Phase change maybe? :D

Go for the 6800GT.

so you all know... 200 is about 250$ american... i feel like a spokesperson for nvidia but... the 5900 is a great card for 170$ on ebay for buy it now n such. and you can PROBABLY flash it to a 5950 ultra. that should run games very nicely especialy for the price. also if you get an x800 your proccesor will cripple it slightly in performance.

here (http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/) are some benchmarks. i beleive i saw a benchmark for the x800 on ut2003 getting 140-150 fps? anyways i remember it was about 40 from the top card listed on there now.

for the higher end cards... click here (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2113&p=1)

lol go for the same card as in my Sig...
It's a nice card, dont know if it will be in your price range though.
I bought it after fucking up and buying a leadtek A360tdh. (256mb card! but fucking 128 bit- only way i found out was using rivatuner, no info on the box or net.)

It's a gigabyte, and although you pay for the name, they make quality products... just dont go getting a fucking sparkle/ sapphire, etc. whatever type you end up getting.

We are talking pounds not euros Terayon....

But you are right about the bottleneck. Ideally you should have a64 system to run along with the x800 or 6800. However, a 2.8gig barton wont cripple the x800, "mild bottleneck" is the way I would put it :)

Probably, on a 'budget' I'd say Radeon 9800 XT

Nvidia were a group I was fairly loyal to for a long time, but, after the FX Fiasco, I bought a 9600 Pro, now, bare in mind a 9600 Pro is fairly budget for ATI, it blew the crap out of anything Nvidia had done for me.

Hense, me going for the X800 XT Plat later this year.

I would also stay away from nvidia unless you plan to get a 6800 series card. People may like their 5700s and 5900s, but you can get a 9800pro 128/256 and it will blow them all away for the same price.
