I just saw a bad movie thread - how about a good movie thread? the one's I've picked here are maybe movies that might not be widely released and maybe people have not heard of. please add yours with a description of what type it is, it's genera. here is a start ->

bottle rocket
offbeat lovestory, funny, good for both chick and guy

night of the comet
warning, this is a scifi B movie, but not a bad one, good camp fun

the five deadly venoms
vintage hong kong kung fu, a classic in this area

le circ rouge (the red circle)
old french film, possibly an inspiration to tarantino

true romance
tarantino

ronin
modern action film with european overtones, best driving sequences I've ever seen, unfortunately I would guess it inspired behavior that lead to the princess di collision :(

uncle buck
wonderful 80s comedy, excellent john candy, even a family movie if kids are over 12

tron
classic movie, scifi, with decent actors

lone star
mystery, bit of love story, crossover flick (guy and chick)

not a single continuity error, great dialogue, amazing wardrobe

Jackie Brown
Tarrantino

Pulp Fiction
Tarrantino

Resevoir Dogs
Tarrantino

Kill Bill
Tarrantino

I dont know if this belong here but I was watching Boogie Nights last night on Channel (porn) 5 and there was a scene where this dude at a porn industry party who's wife who was a porn star was shagging this other guy. Then the dude got really angry and killed his wife, the dude she was shagging and then walked out into the party, smiled and shot himself. That really shocked me, more so than any other scene in any other film, nearly made me cry.

Equilibrium was fucking AWESOME

And so was Boondock Saints. Hopefully the sequel doesn't disappoint. The website has autographed DVDs for sale right now but the god damn shipping costs MORE than the cost of the DVD!

And yeah, Ocean's 11 was definately a very good remake of a not very good movie.

Kaufman's scripts/screenplays own: Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind...

Anything Tarantino.

Snatch, Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels (Guy Ritchie)

The Way of the Gun, The Usual Suspects (Christopher McQuarrie)

Battle Royale, Donnie Darko...

And for the love of god, Darren Aronofsky! Pi was killer, and Reqiuem for a Dream was just one of the greatest, most gripping films I've ever seen. His camerawork is just stunning.

Three Kings is an excellent movie too, and still, oddly, appropriate for todays situation.

Wag the Dog.

Magnolia.

Fucking Amal

It's a movie about a girl that lives in a swedish town called Amal, but the town sucks... And then the girl finds out she's in love with the most popular girl in school and she doesn't know how to tell people she's a lesbian and she basicly feels like shit most of the time.
But it's such a great movie...
Also, it almost didn't make it to some movie festival cause customs thought is was a porn movie lol (which it isn't)

Mad Max 1, 2 & 3 - (ok, maybe not 1 so much) Post Apocalyptic sawn-off shotgun touting dune buggy drivers.

Blade Runner - Best film setting ever, story line wasn't the best, definitive cyberpunk.

The Fifth Element - Vertical cities, rawking soundtrack... win.

The Blues Brothers - Best car chase and ending ever.

Die Hard 1 & 3 - Best action ever (we'll ignore 2)

Indiana Jones: Raiders of the lost ark & The last crusade - Also the best action ever + indy... win. (Temple of doom... doom in title: win, small annoying child and annoying woman: lose)

Total Recall - Cause it's based off an awesome book, and features the worst nose/eye-involving special FX ever.

Terminator 3 - Best ending ever. (I'm allowed 2 best endings ever)

Hackers - Disgrace to the hacker community.. yet, damn good.

Brazil - 1984 on steroids.

1984 - Brazil on steroids.

There are more, but I don't want to spam too much :)

If you like gorey samurai movies you should check out Vs its not exactly samurai both combatants use samurai swords in combat. Its all very supernatural in a Japanese way, two brothers against each other trying to become fully fledged gods. Lots of zombies and gore, all good :D

I've got most of those movies myself although some are on VHS fist of the north star included, good movie as far as manga/anmie goes.

Common misconception as the stories are vaguely similar. Lucas actually said it inspired the naration style of the first movie - ie centering the POV on two fringe characters (C3PO and R2D2) rather than the leads. He lifted elements of the actual story from a large range of places (all/most of which he freely acknowledges), mostly the Lensmen series by EE Doc Smith.

It it a great movie though, definitely worth getting hold of as with any Kurosawa/Mifune films.

nicely said, you put it much more eloquently than I - but I'll stand by what I said :) I didn't quite mean it was the sole inspiration for star wars.

don't think I've seen too much John Woo in the list, has anyone mentioned "The Killer" or "Hard Boiled" yet? they are a little dated now but they are classic classic hong kong police/action.

I'll go out on a limb and post "Hulk" as well. I think it was the best arranged and translated comic book movie ever. They took a simple story and adapted and presented it very well. Spider man may grab much excitement and attention but the hulk was a better movie I would say.

Spider man may grab much excitement and attention but the hulk was a better movie I would say.I tried to only pick 2 films from each director or I'd have posted WAY too much. I was torn between The Killer and Bullet In The Head and I'm glad someone mentioned the one I didn't pick :). Hard Boiled is also amazing and even MI:2 had moments when I remembered his former and true glory.

For comic adaptations the most true-to-original (in style if not story) were IMO - Ghost World, The Crow, Crying Freeman and Superman. All great films too. Hulk didn't do much for me but then I never liked the comic so maybe that means it was a good conversion.

nice posts, I keep having memories here - this is a classic

Yakuza, The (1975)
ready to revisit the 70s? it's dated, but a damn good movie. not released on dvd yet I think - don't bother unless you can see it widescreen I would say. It's a good film but the very end raises it up even more. it's vintage/drama/action - not necesarily a crossover flick unless your chick is very cool
