The fact someone made a full-size RL Damascus Blade worries me a bit but read onto the main part of the article for serious coolness.

It's a bit long and I'm sure the science stuff and history will bore some people but get to the end part and you'll want to own it.

The folding part is, yeah. IIRC the japanese got it from the chinese who in turn got it from the arabs.

The cool thing though is that these particular swords weren't made that way and were/are much better. I thought it was seriously cool how they managed to make them without understanding why they were so good and then lost the "knowledge". It's fascinating to see how the roots of legends are formed from things like this and also that a whole "new" technique was found for doing something so simple so much better.

Yeah damascene (SP?) blades ARE folded, but the technology and mettalurgy is totally different.

AFAIK Damascus blades use high-carbon steel, katana are made with iron and steel folded so that you get a resiliant core with a razor-sharp and hard outer layer.

Nope, but it looks cooler :pOne thing you really can't tell from that page unfortunately is what the Damascus blade(s) (the real ones, not the comic-book version) really look like. I imagine they react interestingly to light and movement. They could also of course just look sort of mucky. Either way I think it'll look far more unique than any other sword you're ever likely to see.
