what the shit
or rather how the shit
does telnet work
ive been trying to place an eggdrop bot on an irc channel. it says i have to telnet to the shell an untar the files, set it up etc, im using putty, but when i type in the IP and port and click connect, the command screen comes up, no login screen though, and when i type anything in it closes the command screen.

does anyone know about telnet, or about eggdrops/irc bots, or if theres a certain port i need to connect to? any help would be nice thanks.

putty is fairly self explanetery, its been a long time since ive used telnet or ssh myself because i cant afford a shell any more but my best advice would be RTFM, eggdrops can be hell to configure and get working so read the readmes very carfully.

edit : didnt read properly heh sorry

other thing to check you do actaully have shell access to the server yea? not just web hosting

Check with your webhost to see if you have shell access.

Some hosts are REALLY funny about shell access....can't think why though........ |-|/-\><()|P Z

you can do it thru windows DOS, type in:

telnet ip.add.re.ss

it should then ask for your username, then your password

you wanna then untar your package..

tar -xvf package.tar

etc...

But only like Oath said, if your host actually gives you shell access (mine does :p) and allows Egg Drop/Bots (most T&C strictly prohibit the use of said bots)
